  • Wanna help me out with an assignment?

Hey all, I have to administer this survey that I made about ideal work situations for sociology class. If you'd be so kind as to fill them out, I have to make the survey and administer it, then summarize my results. Its all anonymous so I'm not going to put anyones names in it. No right or wrong answers and this is supposed to be your ideal job situation (within reason of course), not neccessarily reflective of what your current job is. Thanks!!

    ************************************************** *****************

Answer the questions on a scale of 1-10 according to the question, and provide open-ended response if you'd like:

    1. Is having a challenging job something important to you, i.e., would you rather have something more specialized in ability level, or something more general? (1-more important 10-less important)

    2. Would you rather have a flexable schedule at work, or something more routine (i.e. 9-5)? (1-flexable, 10-routine)

    3. Do you prefer a more involved job, or something just for monetary purposes-is your job the biggest source of personal satisfaction to you, or is that something outside of your job? (1-more involved, 10-involved the least amount possible)

    4. Would you rather have a safer work enviroment for lower pay, or something a bit more dangerous for higher pay? (1-more safe with less pay, 10-less safe with more pay)

    5. Are health/insurance benefits from a job more or less important to you? (1-very important, 10-not important at all)

    6. Is accessability to people in positions of more power and leadership at your job more or less important to you? (1-more important, 10-not important at all)

    7. At a job would you rather have your individual efforts recognized, or would you rather work as part of a team? (1-soley individual, 10-team only)

    8. Would you rather have more responsibility, i.e. as a manager and so forth, or less?(1-more responsibility, 10-no responsibility)

    9. Would you rather have a job where its easy to move up to higher positions, or are you more content with working in one position for long periods of time? (1-very easy to move up, 10-very difficult to move up)

    10. Would you rather work one position for a long period of time, or would you rather move to different positions and try different things (for example, working in sales, then in operations, or human resources, etc) (1-stay in one position, 10-easily move to different positions)

Why don't you use a likert type scale instead of open ended q's? Easier to fill out and to evaluate IMO. Just my 2 cents! Otherwise, do you want the answers e-mailed or PM'ed?
I feel festive all year round. Deal with it.

Likert scales are nice but Id like a little bit of a broader range of feedback for this one than just based on the questions I ask. The questions are kind of two dimensional anyway. Basically I just want to be able to take things into consideration that I would not have thought of myself and to see things from other's perspectives. Email would work better for me if you dont mind. Thanks again!

EDIT - What the hell, lets do both. Lets do a likert scale, and then give me open-ended answers if you feel like it.

        1. Yes
        2. Routine-early to work, early to leave.
        3. I kick ass, and I get well paid for it.
        4. Alex, I'll take danger and higher pay for $2000 please LOL!.
        5. Very important (family/3kids)
        6. Just comes with the turf.
        7. By my answers, you should know this - I love to stand out, and take on projects with the most visability.
        8. I am a manager, but I prefer hands-on stuff.
        9. After 3 years, I'm bored. I loved being a consultant - new challanges all the time.
        10. See 9.

        So doc, what am I?

          1. challenge is super important.

          2. flexible schedule

          3. this has changed over time - my job used to be a huge source of my personal satisfaction - as i've gotten older (and wiser) i derive my satisfaction from my family, friends, and music!

          4. safe work environment - i did the dangerous work environment by going to saudi arabia/kuwait for the first gulf war - fuck that

          5. health/insurance are very important - i have a family

          6. accessability to people in positions of power and leadership is important - those are the people that approve your rewards

          7. both individual and team recognition are important

          8. i've managed teams of around 25 or so - meh, i can take it or leave it.

          9. either way is fine - i want more money so whatever that takes

          10. i do the same basic job - i just move around in terms of the products i develop - so i've worked on tomahawk cruise missiles, operating systems, web browsers, development tools, radar systems, etc.
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

            1. Yes

            2. A little of both. I work 7-4 or 5, 5 days a week, but if I need a day off during the week it's usually not a big deal.

            3. Right now my job situation severely (sp?) sucks. So I guess I am working just for the money. I prefer to enjoy what I do. I get my satisfaction from being with my husband and my music.

            4. Safe work environment.

            5. Benefits are very important to me, and I currently do not have any.

            6. The owner of this hotel is here everyday, I find he gets in the way more than helps me. I just wish he would go away. But yes, if I want access to the higher ups, just don't want them here all the time.

            7. Both

            8. I am currently a hotel manager. Some days lately I'm wishing I wasn't. In a good work environment I enjoy being in charge.

            9. If it benefits me to move up...fine. If it doesn't really, I don't want any part of it. Like when they give you more responsibility and no more (or even LESS) pay.

            10. I got to where I am by moving around and learning different departments. I enjoyed it. I love learning new things. Keeps me from getting burnt out and bored.

              1. More specialized in ability level

              2. Very routine, though able to take personal days of course

              3. Something that helps people while reeling in the green

              4. 6... Slightly more dangerous rather than completely on the safe side

              5. 10... I hardly ever get sick with anything and am not accident prone

              6. 1...

              7. 1... This isn't work-related, but in every one of my classes, every moron wants to work on every single assignment in partners/groups... I hope they all pursue a career in the business world.

              8. 6... More responsibility/power than other people, but not the highest up... it's always good to have someone else to blame and not make so many big decisions

              9. It would be cool to be able to move up fast, but not very effective assuming there's certain things in each position that are important to learn while there

              10. Isn't this the same as #9?

1: 6) 2: 10) 3: 3) 4: 3) 5: 1) 6: 1) 7: 4) 8: 3) 9: 4) 10: 4 . God, am I'm glad I am retired. Hoops jumped through too many to count. Based on being almost 56 and having gone through all that, and with a BA in Sociology, I can say with great authority that most workers have seen that most work situations would deserve a BS degree.

I should have got a degree in Zoology. At least, animals are animals and they don't know why. We "sociologists" deal with animals that think they know why.:ROTF:

Cool--Sociology Talk!! I'm working on my Ph.D. in Rural Sociology. Is this for a methods course?

                        My answers:

1.) 1--I'm going through hell for a Ph.D. so it damn well better be specialized and challenging.
2.) 3--I'll probably stay in academia but I'll still need to maintain some sort of schedule.
3.) 3--You have to love what you do, however, you also must have an escape.
4.) 2--My entire family mined coal. Give me less pay for safer work.
5.) 1--Is anyone going to answer this as a "10"?
6.) 5--Academia has a great deal of autonomy but you'll still need access to the "higher-ups".
                        7.) 2--Tenure requires personal recognition.
                        8.) 2--
9.) 4--As long as I receive tenure at some point I'll be happy.
                        10.) 2--See "9".

So, what type of analysis are you doing? I imagine your sample size will be too low to actually perform any statistical analysis, so how are you reporting your results?

BTW, I answered this as how I "expect" to feel in another 2-3 years.

                            1. 6 - I don't have documents that state everything I've taught myself how to do over the years, but I do like being in positions where I can do those things, although I understand the company may ask for something I can't do in a given program right away (a particular form layout in Office that I can only do in Corel or some other non-MS app, etc). When a job is the "same old, same old" day in/day out it gets boring.

                            2. 8-8.5 - I prefer a fixed schedule but am open to slight variations for Safety or 5S Teams.

                            3. 4-7 - Depending on the level of involvement (and responsibilities and expectations, as well as consequences). While I don't want to be The Head Cheese, I do want to have my suggestiond of how I do my job and what I need to make my job easier/safer/faster/more productive/more enjoyable taken seriously.

                            4. 1 - Safety First. Dead rich people are still dead. Severely crippled rich people are still severely crippled. Yay, you made a $50K bonus last year but lost the use of your limbs to do it. Congratulations on being a complete idiot. Although the lack of risk is not excuse to shortchange people on pay. It costs money to live, ad those costs go up. Pay needs to reflect that in all levels not just in the top 1%.

                            5. 1 - Want to know what kind of financial shape your employer is in? Look at the healthcare package. It tells you more and sooner than stock reports.

                            6. 3 - As was stated, that's where your advancement comes from, as well as opportunities to move not only up the ladder but across the corporate structure. However, given the current business mindset of playing touchy-feely with the employees to coddle them and be sensitive to their feelings, I don't see myself being a manager. I am open to higher-level managerial support, but not being a higher-level managerial flunkie.

                            7. 5 - Teamwork has always been an acronym for Take Advantage of Me Without Observing the Rules of Karma. I have yet to be on a "team" where everyone was rowing the boat together, and there's always one person who wants to row in the opposite direction just to be different, and one who wants to pass their load to someone else. There's also someone who wants to be Lord High Dictator. It's either a Team or it's a group of MVP hopefulls, make up your mind.

                            8. 4 - More responsibility as long as it comes with more authority. Whatever I'm given responsibility over must come with the authority to govern it. As an example, my employer has recently replaced the tools for the Press Operators yet again, and this time instead of being in a locked box that only one person has access to, they're on rolling display carts that anyone can walk up to and get a tool off of. However, if a tool goes permanently missing, the Operator who was assigned to that Press will be held responsible for replacing the tool. I informed them that in order to saddle me with that responsibility, I would have to have the authority to limit who goes near the tools and Press I am assigned to.

                            9. 3 - I do like to have opportunities to move up, but don't want it handed to me based on some social promotion-type scale. If there's a job above mine that someone besides me is better suited for, even if they've been there for less time, then it is in the company's best interest to put that person in that position rather than give it to me. I work for my own personal gain, but if the company puts me doing something I can't do, it risks my ability to gain, and could negatively affect the company's ability to gain.

                            10. 5 - If it's something I enjoy doing (like what I do now, which is primarily run a large stamping press), I don't mind staying with it. There's not much else higher I can go, except maybe to Maintenance. The pay would be better, but the safety hazards also increase. There's also TeamLeader, but I refuse to be a psychologist and listen to grown people whine like children unless I'm getting Psychologist-level pay. I also refuse to let someone chew me out when a full-grown adult under my supervision refuses to do their job and I don't have the authority to give them the boot and/or replace them.

Figger that one out, Sigmund :ROTF:
