In the studio (new experience for me)..

For the past week and a half my band has been in the studio. We scored 2 free weeks from a local recording school.
I've heard different people here say they enjoy it, and others say they don't. Well, you can add me to the DON'T camp!! It's frustrating, time consuming, generally I find it all to be a big pain in the ass!!
Now, if you've heard our current recording you know my band desperately needed a quality recording...so I'm glad we got this chance. But geez...I didn't realize it was possible to screw up the same song 1 billion times in a row . We did manage to get an EP done. We are in the mixing process now..which sucks too. We should have the master by Tuesday.
I will say the guys running the school are professional, the students have been great, and I honestly feel they have our best interest in mind. They have given some good input and sometimes its refreshing to have an unbiased opinion about the sound, music etc.
Anyhow, I just wanted to share that

I'll be the odd man out hear and say that I love recording. I always have. It is time consuming and can be expensive and stressful, but I love it in the studio. I like playing live too, but that can have it's own stresses.

I can't wait to hear the finished product Jeri!

Congrats on getting the recording time! It can be frustrating, to me the waiting around for my turn is the hardest part! Drummer taking all day to get a sound is a PITA too, and scratch tracking for the drummer and then going back to do the "real tracks" is time-consuming. Plus there's the "white-coat" syndrome that some of us get when the red light's on.

The good news is that each time you do it it will be a little easier and more comfortable!

Why did you have to play the whole song again? Didnt your engineer know what a "punch in " was? It shouldnt take all day to get good drum sounds if you use a good engineer.

Exactly. I wouldn't mind comparing the differences between doing it myself and working with a "studio guy". I'm sure we'd have great fun debating my need for individuality vs their desire to run me through their setup so it's easier on them to make me sound like that band that plays all those songs on the radio :ROTF:

I like recording but the rest of the band I was in didn't have the patience for it - they thought it would take a week

They had no problem with taking a week to dial in their "perfect" sound, but when it came time to actually record, they got flustered and whiney.

At rehearsals, they only wanted to practice the songs once and move on to something else, even though we still needed to work on a lot of stuff to make it better.

Ah well....

Congrats on getting these two free weeks!

Currently we (my band Devastator) are in the studio too, but we finance it ourselves. Gonna record a full-length album...
Currently our drummer is doing his tracks, but I already spend 5 hours there to program the timechanges into ProTools. That was quite a task, we got lots of time changes.

We also plan to follow right up with my other band Uncreation (full-length too) so in a few weeks I'm gonna have ALOT of studio experience... and probably alot to whine about.

Because I'll think about punching in, but then I'll listen again and think I can do it better...I'm too critical of what's going on.

Was this a "live" type of recording session, where everything is being tracked at once? I know that some of the studios around here offer package deals, and having read the details, there is NO way that a band could record more than two songs in the time provided if recording each member individually.

I enjoy the recording portion, but mixing gets old really fast. Even worse is after you've recording everything great and after many hours of mixing realize that your recorded tone is garbage. Woo!

Yeah Inazone, this is a live type thing. We are each in our own room playing at once. Then we can go back and redo something individually if we are unhappy with it.

Congrats on getting the time. Once it's all done and you have the final product you may see it all in a different light
