If you want to get back into it, but don't want to go completely nuts, I recommend the 1/18th scale stuff that's big now. I've got the Losi Mini-T which is a scaled down version of their XXX-T 2wd truck. But there's a ton of other ones out there - there's the Kyosho Inferno Half-8 (1/16th scale), Associated has a 4WD truck, buggy and Monster truck, Losi has the Mini LST monster truck. Tamiya has a 1/18th scale rock crawler thats pretty cool. Most of them come ready to run.

:ROTF: I here ya. I was wondering, back in the old days I used to have those Cox Gas cars (I think all of them including the infamous Dune Buggy )and my Dad had a Gas R/C plane. What would be best to start out with, a electric powered or gas powered car? I know those gas powered ones are crazy fast.

Electrics are just about as fast as nitro - the RC speed record is held by an electric. Where electric has it all over nitro is acceleration. Nitro's got the torque. When your talking off road, go anywhere, up anything, through anything - go nitro.

Nitro is real easy to get into now too -- ready to run models are just about bulletproof off the shelf which means you can run tank after tank of fuel through them without having to wrench on anything.

Once you get into high performance stuff - nitro or electric - you spend more time on the workbench than running them.

If you have never had an RC car before I would say go with an electric first.
Gas cars are cool but they do require more maintenance. the best luck I have had with gas RC is my Traxxas T-MAXX.
The RC Car/Truck you decide to buy will also depend on how you intend to use it.
If all you are going to do is bash around the yard I'd say a T-MAXX from Traxxas. It comes in both gas or electric powered, prebuilt and ready to run. The nitro powered one will require some minor break in of the engine. It will come with a radio system that is OK for most use.

If you get bit by the racing bug be ready to spend big bucks to be competitive. This holds true no matter what type of RC vehicle you buy, Monster Truck, Stadium Truck, Buggy, Gas or Electric.

Let me know if I can help and HAPPY SHOPPING

Thanks for the tips! I'd say I'm most likely be bashing the car about the yard I have semi-retired from my other hobby, vintage Motocross. Since 1992, I have restored and raced over 35 bikes, British, Chec, Swedish, German, Austrian, Spanish and Japan made bikes. My National Championship bikes are in my house now on display. (the family room and living room-and no, I'm not married:ROTF: Although, I met a female engineer at work that restores vintage road bikes and they are in her house too! ) Too much money, time, and broken body (me) parts are too blame for my retirement.
R/C sounds pretty neat. There are a bunch of tracks in my area to race too. I must resist or my Jackson/Charvel budget will get killed

                      I like this one!
Of course this Nitro "T" is enticing. A little more money though!

Good choice, Traxxas makes good RC car/truck. They are tuff and 4 wheel drive monster trucks are a blast.
Now when the race bug bites you will need some deeeeeep pockets

Yeah, I've been reading about setup tables, suspension mods, engine tuning, etc....... I'm going to try to stay away from serious racing. I've done enough of that throughout my motocross career and my slot car passion. Yeah, like any serious hobby, it can get expensive

Yeah, when I bought my first kit (Associated RC10/T2) the guy at the hobby shop ask "Are You Going To Race" and I said no "Just Going TO Play".
It wasn't a week before I was back to buy all the hop ups

                                Titanium Turn Buckles
                                Full Bearing set
                                Electronic Speed Control
                                Batterys
                                Chargers
                                Better Tires
                                Better Steering Servo
                                Better Radio System

A $400 investment went to $1000 in no time and now its over $10,000 or more like 12 to 15,000 I have spent if I include everything I have bought and sold.
But it was all worth it, It gave me and my son something to do on weekends when he came to my house other than sit in front of the TV.
