Make sure you insure it or it is covered by insurance if you intend to keep it for him. I wouldn't feel comfortable accepting it either, but I would hold onto it for safe keeping. If he insists its yours at a later date.. then..at that time, you can choose yet again what to do, keep it as a extreme token of friendship.. or, sell it and invest the money.. doing something equally nice in return... he may need money for a house etc..
It is odd tho.. he's got to be hurting and that is a extremely expensive giveaway..you could read into it or just take it as he doesn't want it around to remind him as it would likely be just another item they fight over, sell and/or split.
