I was at the DLR Poison show here in Dallas at that time and I can vauch there was no pit at all. You are correct that they will try and start one at any concert. I went to see the Black Crows on the Amorica tour. Someone tryed to start crowed surfing to get a pit going. Chris actually stopped the song and ragged on the guy. The whole show had a jam band hippy vibe going and moshing was just not called for.

I've seen Steve Vai a few times now and each time you've had a few lugnuts that want to get something started. Because the crowd isn't into it at all, you'll see crowd surfing dweeb being floated down to the front and dumped into security's lap, at which time security will walk them to the back of the venue. If security have to catch the same guys too often, they'll "walk" them out of the venue.
      Hail yesterday

Overkill was a great show but the pit was not a place I wanted to be. It was full of dipshits smacking each other and thinking they were so cool.Saw one tool smack a girl and 3 guy beat the shit out of him, that was cool.
            Really? well screw Mark Twain.

Genitorturers were on-stage opening for KMFDM in Tempe in the mid-90's... I was in the front and this stupid chick was crowd surfing with COMBAT BOOTS on... her stupid legs flopping around all over the friggin place. I thought, "Dumbass is gonna kick somebody in the damn face with those fuckin' things..." and about two seconds later one of them hit me square in the bridge of the nose and knocked me for a loop. I was dazed, the Genitorturer's light show got instantly more bright and sparkly, and I wanted to stomp that chick into the ground! But that's not my style... I yanked her down from the surf and watched the rest of the kickass show. My face hurt for days! Lol

I saw them at Tip's in New Orleans in 1994. There was no moshpit and it was a wild fucking show.

back in high school me and my classmates used to do the "rubber room".

We were standing in the corridor, backs against the wall, side by side, half of the dudes on the left wall facing the other half who were right. We formed human walls. It was good if there were like 8 or 10 or more people to form the walls.

When somone came between these walls (us) we started pushing them very hardly and they didn't get out of the corridor. They were bouncing like they were in the rubber corridor. It was funny as shit back then. rubber room ahaahaaa...

Well, here is what I recall...and I had a bit to drink that night.

There was live titty piercing on stage, they pierced some dude's scrotum up there too. I am not sure if that was staged, or if he really was having it done for the first time...I think he came from the audience and I think I recalled him passing out as well. The boobs had been pierced before, so she was just passing the needle through pre-drilled nips. They had an angle grinder and they wailed on this "slave" in an iron mask...lots of sparks. It wasn't that bad, shit you can see worse on the streets of the French Quarter during Mardi Gras or Southern Decadance. However, it was good entertainment. S&M mixed with pussy and pounding metal. Plus, I was with my ex-wife when I had just started dating her and she dressed the part that night for the gig...all the little stuff I liked....and I got my brains fucked out that night...shit, when I saw the outfit I think I decided to marry her right then and there.....(note to self, this is BAD reason to decide to get married and it will end poorly!!! ). So, overall...it was a positive experience and I would recommend the show for the sheer entertainment value of it. GWAR came later that year and I missed that one.

I'll say it again: moshpits are fucking -stupid- and do nothing to induce a stronger emotional connection to the music...
I just read blabbermouth about a guy at a korn concert that was killed after an altercation, being punched in the face KO to the ground hit his head hard on the concrete and that was it.

shit like that ticks me off...I sent a couple of guys at a MachineHead show packin' after they were trying to start some stuff...don't try to be ruining my show with acting like 12yr olds!!
want to get your aggression out? bang your head to the music...or go to the gym.
put your hands on me at a show and I'll rip your head off with my teeth
