SL2H is a VERY versatile guitar, pointy headstock doesn't take the blues and jazz tones away

But why should I worry about what othe people think of me and my guitar at college? I worked hard to get in and I want a nice guitar for my adult years. Why would someone judge me by my guitar?
Because in the real world, that is what people do. You are young, give it time...you will learn. While you may think people will just say, "wow, nice guitar...you must have worked hard for that..you deserve it." In reality, this is more of what they are thinking, "who does this asshole think he is with a $4,000 guitar? I bet he can't even fucking play it."

Why make it harder for yourself from the gate? Show up humble and upgrade later if you find alot of other guys sporting high buck customs.

Just a little life advice, take it if you wish.

The SL2 would be fine, not too pricey...but still a fine instrument.

SL2h neck do feel good. My Mod 6's feel terrific also. Very comfortable. Anderson would be a good choice (as well as G&L).

As for "Why would someone judge me by my guitar?" Thats what people do.

I would tend to agree with MBreinin about showing up with a custom shop, or something to that extent. It would be like showing up at your college class wearing a professor robe .

Paul Gilbert had a cheap Squier in GIT and he recorded first Racer X album with it.

You answered it yourself, go with the SL2H.

Perhaps mahogany (custom) if you prefer that side of the tonal spectrum.

[QUOTE=donf]I'd have to recommend a Fender Strat for comfort, playability and sound. Though I have Charvels, Westburys, Gibsons, I always fall back on the Strat for reliability. My 2 cents.[/QUOTE

Couldnt agree more.I love all my axes but the strat is just a great all rounder.Easy to change tunings, stays in tune well and the older they get the better they sound!Has that classic sound and as long as you have a hot rodded bridge pickup you can nail any style and tone

Next choice would be a Parker Fly Classic or Deluxe.Great tones a million miles away from the woody strat with great electronics.tones from acoustic to modern rock easily at your finger tips. Also piss easy to change tunings on the fly and the neck is a joy to play on

If you want a floyd type axe, then JacksonSL1 or SL2,both great traditional shaped guitars that are a joy to play and made to a standard that far exeeds that of other makes.Solid axes built to last

He doesn't have to go custom to get mahogany: SL2H-MAH. But I'd go with a PC1 (also mahogany) before that.

That's right! I was thinking about SLATQH's only, but I figured he'd want a floyd! SL2H-MAH's, oooh boy.

Check out the old style Steve Morse EBMMs. You can pick up a nice minty used example for under a grand. Great guitars, lots of tones, not too flashy.

Scroll down the page and there are pictures of it. That is first class guitar porn for you. Excuse me, I am having a gas attack.

That is a stunning chlorine. The top is insane. But for school I'd focus on playability more than anything else, take with you whatever feels absolutely best in your hands, not what looks the most stunning.

I want an old style Morse, the new one is cool as well, especially the one with the floyd. Cool and versatile guitars for sure.

For my money, that or a nice H-S-S Strat is hard to beat.

Dad's a nice guy. But, if he forks over big bucks on a guitar and it gets ripped off. Look out:ROTF: Why not do a field trip and check out the pawnshops and find a very nice older MIM or even an American Strat. Get the feel of the necks. That, more than anything else, will determine how well you will play. If you insist, a Telecaster would work. Buying a brand new guitar will take a long time to break it in and costs way more than a used one. If my son had the interest and the drive you do, I would have gone out of my way to find a guitar that would have fit him . New guitars always "feel good" but a well taken care of used guitar has all the "new feel" worn away. Then you get down to what it really is. Strats and Teles (and LP's) started all this. The reason why is they are versatile.
I am a true ass set to this board.

A stock SL2H would be a good choice or maybe a Fender Big Apple Strat.

Why not opt for something with h-s-h and coil taps, i've put together two well one adn half still finishing the second ones assembly, and you can geta very nice gutiar for a very little money mighty mite make good bodys and necks thier bodys are routed h-s-h so you can use any config, warmoth are another option, you can have any kind of bridge with those recessed floyd non recessed kahler Fender vintage fixed bridges, endless they are alittle more pricey.

Strats are pretty good allrounders and workhorses, not many peopel will look down on or think a Strat is ott...

Carvin could be another excellent choice....

The SL2H/T is agood choice add a push pull knob for coil taps if need be for even more versatillity...
