What guitar should I get for music college?

The other guitarist in our band has a G&L, it's a very nice guitar. You can't go wrong with a Strat. A DK2 would be a great choice. Play what you can, and pick something you like

Why not opt for something with h-s-h and coil taps, i've put together two well one adn half still finishing the second ones assembly, and you can geta very nice gutiar for a very little money mighty mite make good bodys and necks thier bodys are routed h-s-h so you can use any config, warmoth are another option, you can have any kind of bridge with those recessed floyd non recessed kahler Fender vintage fixed bridges, endless they are alittle more pricey.

Strats are pretty good allrounders and workhorses, not many peopel will look down on or think a Strat is ott...

Carvin could be another excellent choice....

The SL2H/T is agood choice add a push pull knob for coil taps if need be for even more versatillity...

Most "San Dimas" models...pointy or strat head makes no difference.

Whatever guitar you go with make it a quality one.
Its mostly the one guitar you'll be playing for the next 4 yrs or so.
So make it a good one.
May have to pay alittle extra but it will serve you well short term and long term both to go after not only versatility but quality, will prove benefical.

I think I would go with an american made fender strat with the S-1 switching in it or a H-S-S configuration. I also agree with what many have said here. College is a theif's paradise and full of drunk college kids. If you get the guitar of your dreams it is likely to get stolen or at least damaged. If a strat gets a bit damaged that is ok, it just makes it cooler. If it is stolen you can get another one fairly easy. Also, as other have mentioned, the guitar you choose will also influence peoples opinion of you. Like it or not that is the way it is. A strat is a classic that leaves the door open for you to impress them with your playing and not your wallet.

This reminds me of a friend of mine who started college when I was close to finishing. He had a sweet mountain bike and was excited to ride it to school. I told him that bikes are probably the #1 thing stolen. He was sure his lock would stop the thieves...it was gone it a couple weeks.

that's just why folks are suggesting you get something a little more conservative and a little less unique. Get something too ostentatious and, apart from the derision you may face from fellow students (and possibly teachers too) who might resent what appears to be too much of a look-at-me attitude, you may also be making yourself a target for a would-be thief. As others have said, a young guy with a fancy, expensive, boutique or custom shop guitar doesn't look more pro, just more like daddy bought him some expensive gear.

I imagine if you've managed to play your way into music college, you must have a fairly decent instrument already. Why not take it to college, and ask your father to buy you your dream custom Suhr, Anderson, Jackson or whatever to celebrate your graduation? If your axe gets stolen, it doesn't suck much less, but at least it doesn't hurt as hard as that custom in your exact specification that you've just waited 9 months for. Plus it'll be easier/cheaper to replace to get you the rest of the way through college.

My thought for versatility would be H-S-H (though it is my least favorite config, and only have 2 set up like that).
The most underrated and great playing guitar I own is my old Yamaha Pacifica USA H-S-H. GREAT access to the high frets, extremely comfortable neck, and great versatility. Plays like an Ibanez, but sounds like a thicker guitar. They are so underrated, it is a crime. When I want to noodle and just rip on leads, that is the neck I go for.
If you can't find one of those, a Carvin is a good bang for the buck as well...

They're both nice guitars.
What is your preference, bolt-on or neck thru?
Other than that, they are essentialy the same guitar.
Both are made with Alder bodies and Maple necks.
From there, it's all about the add-ons.
The DC200C made from Koa looks awesome!

if you want many sounds + quality .. jackson dk2 is the way to go H S S config.. i have it and i love it, sounds incredible even with the ducan designed pickups. also.. now they sell the newer models with real ducans and EMG's so even better

I have a DK2 with real seymour duncans already and I earned it with my own money. For some reason though, the humbucker cuts out sometimes and I lose the sound. What is the matter with it?

I am a fan of neckthrough guitars so I guess I would rather get a DC200C.

Probably nothing 5 minutes with a soldering iron couldn't fix.
