  • Anybody use CB Perkins in San Jose, CA?

I dropped off one of my Jacksons almost a month ago for setup + fret recrown and still nothing. They said it would take 1-2 weeks when I dropped it off. Every time I call and ask what's up, they say it will be ready tomorrow. But it never is. What the hell is up with this place? They seem to have a good reputation... but damn this is pissing me off. Is this typical of guitar techs?

I used them once. The work was OK but nothing to write home about and very much on the spendy side. They were also way late. Mark Brown does better work but plan on not seeing your guitar before the snow flies.

A month? I'd go pay them a visit in person to see your guitar with your own eyes.
You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.

Yeah, I plan on dropping by tomorrow. It's a bit out of the way for me so this is a big pain. Won't be using them again, that's for sure.

If your up in the city I know a guy named Rick Hogg.
          Works out of his garage.
Let me know if you want more info on him.

wasn't there a thread here a while back about a luthier in the San Jose area who was real late on jobs and ended up trying to sell things out from under some customers?

maybe it was the customer left the country and then came back and his guitar was up for sale or something along those lines.

No, not anywhere near the city unfortunately. Honestly I don't mind the wait, I have other guitars to play, it's the BS "it will be ready tomorrow" game I can't stand.

Thanks for the tip YAO -- I'll consider giving Mark a try next. Hopefully he's more up-front than these clowns.

Bert - Mark is a super nice guy and very reasonable but do be prepared to wait many weeks (months) to get anything back.

Man, I'm glad I live in a barren wasteland (Buffalo) where I can get my guitar back in 3 or 4 days. Then again, there's never any good gear on the local music listing.

Dudes, I HIGHLY recommend Geoff Luttrell at SF Guitarworks (in SF on Potrero Ave @ 16th St). He does incredible work and he's never taken more than a week to get anything done for me.

Thanks, I'd hate to go all the way to SF, but right now it's sounding a lot better than what I'm putting up with now.

yeah my guy in LA takes about a week for most stuff, maybe two for a big job.

Just to follow up, I dropped by today, and lo and behold the guitar was actually finished. Apparently when he said "it will be ready tomorrow" yesterday, he really meant it that time. They actually did very nice work. This guitar has never played better.
