    Let's Fast foward to TRUTH!!.

MTV was being threatened by the NAACP for not playing enough black music. Quincy Jones payed MTV very very handsomely to play Michael Jackson..bought a lot of airtime..

Then thriller came out and that was it..it was a downward spiral for rock music since..

in just a couple of years..Yo MTV raps kicked Headbangers Ball out of it spot..and VH-1, MTV, BET were all playing the same songs in rotation.

Then if you wanted to "rock" you had to fit in..so what happened Rap married Rock..well if you can't beat 'em join 'em..

until now..Metal is cool again..you got your rap and now you got your rock..it's best leaving it that way.

No more phony bullshit music pollitics...especially during the entire Clinton administration..well most minorities are Dems..

So now we have a double term Rep and at war..metal had to come back..wer'e to pissed off to listen to pussy shit..

War makes for great music..ever since Sabbath!!

A lot of chicks were probably lesbians if they liked guys that looked like them or hotter than them. I just could never understand that shit!

Wow, I can't believe I just read this whole thread! I'm 43, and I enjoy lots of different types of music. For me to say I "hate" any one particular band would be stupid, because I don't. They are all what they are, so what's the big debate? Anyone who truly appreciates music as a whole should be able to respect any successful band, whether they like listening to them or not. Before I logged on here tonight, I was just listening to some Steely Dan (Aja). Who all hates them? Oh yeah, and my new Dragonforce CD just got here today....I'm excited to hear the whole thing. Last night I had a few beers and listened to the whole Farewell to Kings album (Rush) and I still love it as much as I did back in 1977! Ya know what....I even like some country stuff! I have every album ever made by Tanya Tucker! Garth Brooks is fucking cool too. Oh, and one more.....a couple of days ago I got the Megadeth Capitol Punishment CD....that is some very good shit! It's all music, and it's all good in one way or another. If you don't like it, pull it out and put something else in!
My goal in life is to be the kind of asshole my wife thinks I am.

Late 80's early 90's the metal scene was getting really stagnant, of its own accord. Inferior albums from many bands, all styles. (Load?? Turbo?? Metal Heart?? Sacred Heart?? Any later Anthrax? Souls of Black?? 5150?? Somewhere in Time?? etc etc ) What was even left for grunge to kill?
Thank god or metal going back underground where it festered and rejuvenated. Death, Tiamat, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, Coroner, Lake of Tears... refreshing.

All these metal 'fans' that grunge 'stole'.. were they really fans?

              Metal belongs underground.

                37, and if I don't hear Nirvana again, I won't miss them.

I listened to them, and I still have their CD's, but between the world thinking Kurt Cobain is a musical genius, and my local radio station playing something by Nirvana pretty much at least one a day since the 90's, they get a little old.

For it is the soundtrack to "stupidity"!!

                    +1

Yes, History shows that metal will pop out it's ugly head once in a while..but it will return to it's hole..like a mole..like a mole-like..thing.

It likes the smell of War..it feeds on people's anger..

                    I like that!!

Someone 20+ pages ago asked me if singing about ooh yeah baby gonna rick tonight is any more silly than Slayer singing about Nazis.

                          They're both silly.

However, Slayer has continued to make great music. I think 99% of all music lyrics suck. They're feeble attempts at poetry. I can live with that.

Bands like Ratt and Dokken wrote a few good songs then released record after record of filler. Warrant and others followed. To me, listening to that crap is like listening to Weird Al or kiddie songs. It's a joke. I don't want to listen to or see men dressed like women. I don't want to hear CC DeVille. When I watch the Decline of Western Civilization, I don't see musicians. I see filthy drug addicts writing mediocre songs that get sillier and cheesier by the minute. I never got the sense that these bands were serious about anything other than getting famous. I want to hear great music. Maybe my definition of great is subjective. It does not include rock em sock em. It does not include smooth up in ya. Or any derivative thereof. It does not include AquaNet.

Markb is correct. Even the good bands started to crank out some crap.

What have 99% of the hair bands done since the early 90's? NOTHING.

Most metal has a cheese factor to it. No doubt about that.

me too. Kurt is hailed as some kind of musical genius, but Dave makes music that I actually enjoy.

34 and I couldn't stand Nirvana, then or now. I don't hate them, but if I never, ever, (ever, ever) hear another Nirvana tune, I won't miss them for a second. One reason I stopped watching RockStar was because I got sick of hearing 'classic' Nirvana songs every frikkin' week.

Like Mark, I enjoy a wide range of musical styles, and am as comfortable listening to acoustic blues, folk, bebop, fusion, big band jazz, (some) pop, classical & straightahead rock as I am metal. But I don't have to respect or like a band just because of their success. There are plenty of bands that I don't like but still respect, Nirvana is not amongst them.
                              Hail yesterday
