Well... it COULD have been a cape. I think it is, but you say it isn't so it must not be. But you could totally get away with saying it was, that you borrowed it from The Count.
            "Ah One! Ah Two!" :ROTF:

That Count is Italian, lemme tell ya. I don't care what they say.

There was no xenophobic slander based in my post on the previous thread. perhaps a touch of friendly Regimental rivalry, but I guess that was lost on a few of you.

I have military experience and have seen enough of the cruelty of mankind against itself to convince me we don't need firearms to inflame the problem. Regardless of how civilised you think you are.

If I had said something along those lines previously though, it wouldn't have attracted the in depth intellectual disscussion that followed

Thought I'd better address this too, seems some of you got the wrong idea.

I have friends all over the world and the first thing they've all done, especially in the UK and Australia, is get on their soapbox to tell me how fucked America is. I don't know why it seems these folks can't wait to tell an American how much they hate America and our way of doing things... And they've never been here!
I never said America was fucked up. I think America is a great country and one of a possible 3 in the world I'd like to settle in. I like the people, the culture and the landscape.

Doesn't make it perfect though, there is always room for improvement.

Taxation without representation is tyranny. You blokes tried to milk us of tax dollars without giving us a say in it. Those guns are how we persuaded you of the error of your ways. I'm sure you'd love to still have the tax revenues from modern America, but too bad. The Second Amendment, the right to bear arms, simply enshrined what this country was built upon. The government will NOT put upon us what we the people choose not to endure.

If the government were thinking of trying to impose a totalitarian state, it would have to consider the fact that some 200 million firearms are in the hands of the American people. That way our government can't enslave us, and if a foreign government were to try and invade, well our army and National Guard are augmented by tens of millions of armed citizens. You think the fucking Taliban were tough? :ROTF::ROTF::ROTF: We had an old battle flag with the snake that read: Don't Tread on Me. Quite agree on the independance thing there, we got whooped good. I believe there was more than a passing involvement from the French though, so not all the credit can be taken by militia (although they all played a part).

However, after 230 years without any foreign force of any description having entered the US don't you think that ammendment has become somewhat redundant?

That amendment is part of the reason why no foreign force would dare to try.
You would have to defeat pretty much every gun owning civilian (legal or otherwise) in the US, not just our military. With a population of nearly 300 million, say only 10% owned a firearm. (it's actualy a much higher percentage) That's 30 million armed people.
The largest army in the world belongs to China, and it's barley 1 million strong.
30 to 1... not good in my book.
And some of us have some pretty scary guns, not just pistols.

No I think the vast arsenal of conventional and nuclear weapons coupled with the fact that the US is the worlds premier superpower with resources that far outstretch any other country's capability to wage a conventional war takes the honours for that.

That is why the US is bogged down in gurella skirmishes around the world, no-one is stupid enough to face you guys in a set piece battle, that's just lunacy.

The ammendament has done nothing to stop any of the terrorist acts of recent years. The threats that face us (becuase we are in the same boat as you on this) require a far different approach than the 2nd could ever address.

Look, I like firing rifles as much as the next guy (not so much handguns, I find them a bit pointless) and I was a marksman when I did those things. But I just think giving everyone the right to carry a gun is dangerous and outdated. Lets face it when the 2nd was introduced attacks from marauding Indian's and a fairly lawless society were major threats. There is now a large well trained police force to deal with the majority of crime and I'd be surprized to see a marauding Indian tribe in downtown Las Vegas.

                            Now that would be funny.

Edit: And yea... the fact that we have a shitload of nukes is a pretty good reason to leave us the fuck alone to.
