No I think the vast arsenal of conventional and nuclear weapons coupled with the fact that the US is the worlds premier superpower with resources that far outstretch any other country's capability to wage a conventional war takes the honours for that.

That is why the US is bogged down in gurella skirmishes around the world, no-one is stupid enough to face you guys in a set piece battle, that's just lunacy.

The ammendament has done nothing to stop any of the terrorist acts of recent years. The threats that face us (becuase we are in the same boat as you on this) require a far different approach than the 2nd could ever address.

Look, I like firing rifles as much as the next guy (not so much handguns, I find them a bit pointless) and I was a marksman when I did those things. But I just think giving everyone the right to carry a gun is dangerous and outdated. Lets face it when the 2nd was introduced attacks from marauding Indian's and a fairly lawless society were major threats. There is now a large well trained police force to deal with the majority of crime and I'd be surprized to see a marauding Indian tribe in downtown Las Vegas.

I think you may be under the impression pro gun Americans wants everyone to carry guns. That's not in any way true. In fact you're partially correct stating that's dangerous, but I'll say again guns are not the only source of violence, guns are not the problem

Every night on the news there's reports of murders or negligent deaths. Morons leave their kids in their cars in 110 degree heat, the kids die and no one pitches a real bitch about it. A few weeks ago one buried her new born baby in her backyard. It was dug up by a neighbors dog and partially eaten... They decided it was best to euthanize the dog over it! When I was a teenager my neighbor, an 80 something widowed woman, was hacked to death with an ax... These stories go on and on, but all anyone can do is shake their heads at the senseless bullshit, BUT when someone is shot morons start screaming gun control.

Gun control? Hmmm how about real penalties for violent crimes!? You're also missing the fact that criminals have more rights here than law abiding citizens. If a criminal steals a gun and robs a store with it he or she will be back on the streets to do it all again in the blink of an eye! If a criminal breaks into someones house and gets shot the homeowner faces criminal charges and will most definitely be sued by either the criminal or the it's family and will likely win the case!

You mention there's a large well trained police force to deal with the crime. How well versed are you on American police? I live in a city with the most fucked up, corrupt police departments on the planet. Earlier this month an off duty cops goes in an auto repair shop and threatens the manager at gun point, was later arrested for it. 4 cops were arrested for using their badge to rob people. Last year a group of cops were indicted on charges of drugs, prositution, theft, burglary and conspiracy to commit murder.

That shit is fairly common. When someone gets pulled over by the city police here they don't know they are going to walk away from it or not. Obvioulsy I'm not lumping every cop into that one mold, but cops are nothing more than people and just because they wear a badge DOES NOT make them good people with good intentions and if they were the only ones allowed to own and carry guns police related crimes would increase exponentially, so your comments are a bit naive.

Since you want to argue why we don't need guns over here how about if I argue why you do. I do not pretend to know a great deal about your country or history, laws, etc., but I seem to remember the IRA being a pain in the ass over there. If people carried to protect themselves and their country against invading forces perhaps that whole saga would have been nipped pretty quick or perhaps those subway bombings wouldn't have happened.

In closing, don't blame a tool for the actions of people, blame the people and punish them accordingly!

May I just say, St James, as an ignorant Brit (whose forefathers created a vast Empire with not insignificant help from piles of Martini-Henry rifles etc) , your post above does nothing to convince the less-enlightened that guns are not "the Devil's Right Hand" (thanks Steve Earle)!

Whilst I have no problem with your assertion that police corruption is rife over there, as I'm sure it may be over here, I think you'd be better not including it in a post involving gun control. To those that think the US is populated by masses of gun-toting cowboys, those sort of comments bring to mind pictures of the place still being like the Wild West!

The issue with gun ownership is one of responsibility, not of "don't fuck with me" (a fine sentiment though that might be). Remember the words of TDR - "Talk softly and carry a big stick" - NOT "tell 'em to fuck off and wave your gun at them".

I'd love to leave it there, but just have to add that your comments about the IRA are way off the mark, though I appreciate you have admitted you know very little about the situation. Had the mainland populous been armed, the IRA would still have held the same beliefs, so would have still carried out their atrocities. All that would have happened is that there would have been more chance of retaliatory strikes against innocents. Living near Coventry, as I do, (and which is where Batfink resides), and perhaps being a tooled-up hot-headed youth, I might have been compelled to go and teach a few of the sizeable Irish population there a thing or two. Hell, at the time of serious IRA action, I can recall discussing in the pub that we should have sent our troops to give the Irish Republic a fucking good kicking, seeing as they were harbouring the terrorists and covering for them (hey, that sounds familiar wasn't that phrase in the news a couple or 3 weeks ago, in Lebanon?? Look how that went! Let's not go there.........)
In fact, who was it who was sponsoring those Irish terrorists, holding nice little fund-raising dinners and inviting CONVICTED terror chiefs to cosy little teas at the White House? Yup, good ole 'merkans...........
