i know guys who always use gig bags. sorry, but the hard case is the ONLY thing my guitars will be carried in, whether it's simply to downstairs or to play out. they're worth a LOT to me, so they're always well protected.

it depends on the guitar..I never used to use gigbags for years of playing in clubs as they really weren't as popular or available in the 80's.
'but'...if all I am doing is traveling from the hotel to the club or from the house to the club or practice.. I sometimes use a good gigbag. Where am I going? through a few doorways into a dressing room or practice area..if I feel like traveling lighter and having the ease to sling my guitar over my back..I use a gigbag. Its a tradeoff on security tho or feeling more secure with a hardcase. There's alot of decent hardcases made by Fender that are very portable.

well..nowadays..if the guitar has to be checked to baggage.. it would be prudent to aquire an ATA flight case. There used to be alot of articles on this back in the 70's and 80's on how the airlines were just trashing and destroying valued instruments. I wouldn't take a cherished irreplaceable LP on tour...I'd take a replaceable factory second or a Korean import that is just as good for the need.
I've taken a Charvel acoustic on a plane several times in an SKB low budget hard case. It went in the overhead as a carryon or .... if the flight staff was exceptionally nice..they'd let me store it in the clothes footlocker for the flightcrew.

I only use them when I leave the house with them. Otherwise they all stay , a dozen on hanging on the wall and the rest (10) on stands.
I don't own hard cases for every guitar I own though. I've build a bunch from parts and those ones have no cases. I never take 20+ guitars with me at once so I'm still all goodshawnlutz.com
