Anyone know anything about these cars? I see one for sale for 7,000 and it looks so damn sweet. Pretty much the car that I want. Too bad I don't have a job and in debt for school.

They are decent, comfy cars. My friend had one. IIRC it had air-ride suspension in the rear, so it was way cushy.

On the downside, you'd better be out of debt and have a job to drive this, because it'll likely be in the shop as often as it's on the road

And do you really want to spend $7k on a 20-year-old car?

Yeah, nice car, but be sure you can afford the upkeep. Parts and service for it will be much much higher than what you'd spend on a 20 year old anything else.

Precisely the reason I never bought a used Jaguar. My favorite 4 door car is the Vanden Plas. I see them for 12 or 13K all the time and they look so sweet. I could easilly buy it, but I know the upkeep, cost of parts and specialised mechanics to perform the repairs would be rediculous.

What is the fuel consumption on it? A 5 litre V8 engine is pretty thirsty, I guess.

Make sure you bought it from a little old lady or man who has kept all the receipts. Anything that goes wrong with that car will cost you a fortune.

Damn.. why do I have to have a obession with high class expensive (at the time) 80's cars. Does anyone know of any cars in this class that doesn't hurt the wallet for maintenance?

The only ones that I think would be light are the Volvo 240 and 740.. I really like those cars as well.

I would do a lot of research about '80's cars in general before I bought one. I don't think they were made very well.

Heh ... 20-year-old cars and "reliability" do not go hand-in-hand. Unless it's a Honda

I was thinking about the general quality of the cars made in the '80's regardless of the maker.

Depends on what you mean by quality. The design in general was very boxy and not necessarilly aesthetically pleasing. However in many ways, 80's cars are higher quality than even today's cars (in terms of quality materials, fit and finish, etc). You'd be more likely to find real metal and beefier plastics in an 80's car.

My 87 Accord was completely rattle-free until the day the transmission died

I wish I knew as much about cars then as I do today, because I'd probably still be driving that car!

My grandparents have one of those. It's sitting idle in the garage now though, they're Beemer people nowadays. New 7 class is sick, but they totally f'ed up the 3 to 5 models.

Good car, regardless, workhorse and great enginesound.

Here's my rule of thumb with British cars - sorry to you blokes over the pond - if I can't start it with a crank like an old Landy when the battery dies and the electrics go out I won't ever touch it.

If I were going to buy a 20+year old car, why not go back to the '60's or '70's and buy a really neat car.

That, and a lime green leopard print suit and you're all set.
