If he was singing like he was on The Legacy or "The New Order" etc etc, I'd be happy, but I'm afraid Testament shit the bed for me with that "Demonic" LP. Totally ruined by Chuck Billy doing "cookie monster" (great description that!) vocals. Sounded like a shit band trying to be Testament.
So I woke up,rolled over and who was lying next to me? Only Bonnie Langford!

    I nearly broke her back

don't get me wrong, i like testament, the new stuff just as much as the old, but i'd still LOVE to hear a band do the heavy thrash riffing of today's standards coupled with some old fashioned SINGING. let's face it, 80s thrash metal is to modern thrash what iron maiden is to swede melo death metal. you know where the new stuff is coming from, but it's still worlds apart.

btw, i know abandoned, we actually played a show with them (funny sidenote: they managed to fuck up the tour bass poweramp...i think they connected their own bassamp to the bass cab without disconnecting our amp first), and i liked their stuff.

but anyways, it's good to see that i'm not the only one who's missing 80s style standarts in modern music. as said above, most mediocre 80s guys could piss circles around the new breed of guitar players that's crowding the guitar world.
seems like i got to look for a decent singer and drummer in my area as soon as i got my shit together (A levels and stuff)....this is something i've been wanting to do for a long time...modern thrash with clean vocals and decent (read: not slayer influenced) leads

I thought Joe was talking about 80s singers, not 80s guitarists. I can't see too many of the old shredders seriously hanging with guys like Jeff Loomis, Olaf Lenk, Magnus Karlsson, Gus G, et al. Not to belittle their amazing playing back then, but there are a bunch of new guys who've picked up that ball and RUN with it.

All you guys pissing and moaning about how there aren't any good singers any more, but aren't interested in modern power metal (plenty of damn good singers there) and wish modern thrash had good singers like 80s thrash bands......which 80s thrash bands had good singers? Overkill, Megadeth, Metallica, Exodus, Anthrax? They were all gruff, abrasive, not particularly good singers, but that was okay because it fit the style they were playing. But I can't recall any Halfords or Dickinsons singing in thrash bands.

Or are you all hoping to find a modern Vince Neil (mediocre 80s singer) fronts Laaz Rockit (decent thrash band) type group?

Put me on the list that hates the cookie monster shit. Vocals should be like every other instrument in the band, and make "music". When it comes to the point where the "singer" (and I use that term lightly these days) does nothing but grunt and growl at the mic, I just dunno. Makes no sense to me.
Then again, when I was young I can remember my Mom saying the same thing about guitar players. (she was a pianist).
My goal in life is to be the kind of asshole my wife thinks I am.

Check out Susperia. The vocals are similar to Chuck Billy on The Gathering or First Strike Still Deadly (his singing vocals, not the "cookie monster" as many have mentioned they hate). It's not "80's style" vocals, but still melodic with a rough edge. And the music is great (check out the "Vindication" album, you can check out an MP3 at nuclear blast's website). To top it all off; the guitarists play Jackson. Definitely worth a listen.

oh, I can think of a bunch of newer bands (Firewind, Tarot, Evergrey, Pagan's Mind, Pink Cream 69, Prototype - I'm at work, so this is off the top of my head) but some of those may edge over towards "cheesy Power Metal"

Ok, so how about a modern-sounding Metal band with "singing" instead of "vocalizing" whose name does not sound:
-Satanic, or "pseudo-Satanic" - "Hey look, we're Evil and stuff"
-Vaginal excretions - "Pink Cream 69"? Puhleeze
-a new variation on any stage of death - Post Mortem, Rotting In The Casket, Putrid, Pustulent, Bloated, etc etc
-corny - Olaf Bergermeister's Post-Apocalytpic Ragtime Rennaisance Bagpipe Jug Band, or something from a D&D game
I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

The most human thing we can do is comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.
