modern bands and clean vocals?

Mediocre players? Have you heard any of the bands I mentioned earlier? Guys like Gus G from Firewind (also of Dream Evil, mentioned by someone else here) has all those 80s tricks down, and is damn entertaining to watch play too! Jorn Viggo Lofstad from Pagan's Mind (and Jorn's solo gig) plays exciting, interesting solos, has technique to burn and you can actual remember the solos after he finishes, as does Tore Ostby from Ark (another Jorn project).

Iced Earth are a great band with great songs, but then....no outstanding solos. Not that it's a deal breaker for me, but since we're now talking about guitar solos too......

I like Barlow's voice, but I don't consider him a great singer. I think Marco Hietala from Nightwish/Sinergy/Tarot is better (and heavier) and of course, nobody is better than Jorn Lande.

Plus Jorn has played in so many bands, if one isn't to your liking, another may be. Check out Masterplan. Or Ark.

You know what...I'm not a spoon fed sheep..I don't bitch about why there isn't any good metal bands around..I do my own reserch and buy what I like..and I find and buy ALOT...SHITLOADS!!!!!!!

I have well over 50 thousand dollars invested in metal of all genres..that's over 50K and not stoppin' anytime soon..that's how much I love metal..it's my fucking life!!!

I suggest doing the same..it's alot easier than ever to find and sample great bands..we didn't have PCs when I did it the ol' fasion way..thru mail order catalogs, and local metal shops..remember those!!

Remember taking a chance on a band just because the cover art was cool???..I did that, about 2000 times!!

back in the 80's..fuck at least I could keep up, when I didn't have money..most of those bands sound GAY now, in comparison to the state of the art production and skilled players that really ran with the ball!!!

Now that I have money, I can't even keep track what's out there anymore because it's so fucking abundant..

ok, disclaimer: different people like different music, remember, music is art and therefore subjective.

my opinion on these new shredders like magnus karlsson (sp?) and the likes is that most of their songs are piss boring. sure, they can shred like crazy, but the solo isn't the most important aspect of a song. in fact, the song comes first, and then a great solo is just a nice addition, to complete the package so to speak. sure, there are some exceptions - gus g does some nice stuff for example.
same thing goes for barlow. i think he's an outstanding singer. not quite on par with coverdale or dio, but certainly leagues beyond e.g. warrel dane from nevermore - ever listened to warrels vocals in a live setting? seems like he's got hardly any days left where he's "on". but comparing barlow to hietala is a JOKE. barlow has the better range, and is waaaay more emotional. whether it's anger, melancholy, or total insanity, barlow delivers.

and just to clarify...i'm not saying that there's no good metal left, that's BS. i just don't like the sole fact that most newer bands - especially underground bands - don't even THINK about doing clean vocals. maybe it's different in cleveland, but in my area like 90% of the bands are doing brutal or melodic death metal, heavily downtuned, with crappy cookie monster vocals. there are also a few (very few actually) bands that do the whole german powermetal thing (primal fear, gamma ray, blind guardian, brainstorm etc...you know the drill), but usually they end up in total cheese mode...BAH! it's the middle ground that's lacking!

and btw, i'm no longer a member of FB. musically, we were a great match, but personally it just didn't work out. you got to know that this band is basically a 3piece (gtr, drums, vox) plus 2 hired guns for live work.....go figure

seriously, why are players like Lenk and Magnusson etc. better than the 80's guys? I don't see it. They have more speed (old guys spent more time writing kick ass songs instead of practicing to sound like a robot). But speed doesn't make you better than Sykes, Moore, Alex, Lynch, Howe etc. were in their glory days. Those dudes wrote badass tunes, had monster tone, feel, phrasing, vibrato everything. Those new dudes are just weak rip-offs.
