Raytheon unveils spinoff of Active Denial nonlethal weapon

Raytheon on Sept. 13 unveiled its plans to market a derivative of the military's Active Denial nonlethal weapon, and gave media the chance to experience the system's effects for themselves during a demonstration in Arlington, Va.

Active Denial uses a beam of millimeter-wave energy to create a sensation of intolerable heat in a person's skin without doing any lasting damage. The system originally was developed for the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory as an advanced concept technology demonstration (ACTD). Raytheon delivered to AFRL a system scaled to fit on the back of a Humvee in 2000.

With the ACTD now in its final year, the U.S. military is considering a possible deployment of the system to Iraq (DAILY, May 24). Meanwhile, in 2004 Raytheon chose to develop a spinoff commercial version of the system, dubbed Silent Guardian. The Silent Guardian antenna can emit a beam 45 inches across out to an effective distance of 250 meters or more.

Raytheon is marketing Silent Guardian as a tool to assist with missions such as checkpoint security, force protection, riot control, stability operations and law enforcement. The system can be installed as a fixed turret or mounted on a vehicle.

During the demonstration, reporters were invited to place their hand in front of a scaled-down version of the transmitter. The sensation begins as one of warmth, quickly intensifying to painful heat, then disappears when the subject gets out of the beam's path.

"It has no long-term effects, but it will certainly shape your behavior when you're exposed to it," said Mike Booen, vice president for advanced missile defense and directed energy weapons at Raytheon Missile Systems. "This gives people - military, law enforcement, embassy protection - an option somewhere between shouting at intruders and shooting at them." The 95-gigahertz beam will pass through clothing, but is blocked by wood, heavy metal or concrete. (c) Aerospace Daily & Defense Report

If no steps are going to be taken to enforce immigration laws at the border (it's called ILLEGAL immigration for a reason), then a wall or any other half-assed method is just wasted money and effort. Conditions will get worse before they get better in Mexico, so it's not as if border security is going to be a priority there. If anything, far more people will be headed north.

it is not one or the other, we need both the national guard and the wall. the wall acts as a force multiplier allowing us to concentrate on areas that aren't fenced and that will hugely reduce the illegal barging fest that is going on now.
