I prefer 2. Of course with guitar players (you all know this is true) there is a tendancy to butt heads over solos and writing riffs. It is just the nature of the beast. Best bet is to have a lead player and a rhythm player who only does rhythms. I personally only play 1 solo with my cover band in a 3 set night and that's fine by me as I do almost all the backups and sing lead on a few songs too. But guys like me who want to be in a band are few and far between. 2 guitars does add another element which broadens the scope of rhythm sound. For instance, when we play Believer by Ozzy/Randy, During the verse our lead player plays the riff where Randy did while I play the octive beneath it and the bass bottoms the whole thing out. The sound is immense this way. Also, having rhythms under solos live just tightens the whole thing up. The only song that I step aside and drink some beer or Jager while the lead is going on is Walk by Pantera. It just doesn't sound right with rhythm there.
