North Korea detonates underground nuke

I'm sure some of you may know, but I'll post it here in case some have not watched the news. They just claimed to have done a successful test about a half hour ago.
The test has been only confirmed by them but a seismic tremor of 3.58 was registered in the South corresponding with the time of the test.

Needless to say.. this will have immense repocussions and complicate the world tensions considerably more. I heard a DPRK (NK) foreign diplomat on MPR the other night and it was a very terse interview saying the US actions and comments were considered as an act of war.

The 800-lb. gorilla in the room is the PRC. We really CAN'T attack North Korea without the Chinese intervening, and unless we went nuclear, kicking our asses by sheer numbers.

We can ask China to pressure NK, and could cut off all support and starve them even further. Will that help, or hurt? L'il Kim and his army eat no matter what. it's the peasants who'll starve.

exactly.. China can point their fingers in part at themselves for this. Being they are pretty much allied or close to it with the North.

The North has fairly obvious ambitions, reunite the Koreas either by political coercion, ultimatum or war,... which will put us in the heart of the frey. These guys mean business..they have about 50 per 1000 of their population enlisted into the military and one of the largest special OP forces for war behind enemy lines.


We should have handled this 55 years ago, or at least in the early 90's. We may have even helped it along.
The date is significant.... as on October 8, 1997, Kim Jong-il was named General Secretary of the Korean Workers' Party. In 1998, the legislature reconfirmed him as Chairman of the National Defence Commission and declared that position as the "highest office of state."

Dems and War don't mix well. If they get the President, you can look for Vietnam II. If the Reps get it, at least theres a chance of doing to Beijing what we did to Hiroshima as a first response instead of a last resort.

Nuking Beijing would NOT be worth it over this! That would definitely usher in full-blown World War III, and china has plenty of ICBMs. American cities WOULD be vaporized and anyone around the world who's been waiting to make a power play would do it at that time. Talk about a Pyhhric victory, that is it.

We have no real military option here that doesn't hurt us worse than it hurts them.

Exactly Ron. They are not happy about this at all. China is rapidly becoming a "civilized" country, and they are not happy at all about the trouble that this will cause for them.

This is the first I have heard of this test actually happening. Sad and frightening. Kim Jong Il is going to find himself all alone in the world if he loses China watching his back. "I'm so ronery" may have been prophetic.

And I hope he keeps that position for now. We've already got one major conflict to fight, and we dont really need another one. Its unfortunate that the world leaders placate these up and coming dictators. Its exactly what europe did with hitler in the 30's, they gave him what he wanted, hoping it would be enough, and he just didnt stop. Next thing you know, what ever was left of europe was begging the US to join the war, and we saved their collective asses.

One more country with Nukes is one more than this world needs right now. I just hope one of these fools dont go shooting those things at someone. At this point everyone should be concerned that Iran might buy nuclear technology from Korea.
