I have 2 Golden Retrievers...Ginger & Rusty. The oldest is our female "Ginger", she's almost 5 years old. The past 18 months she has had problems walking, running, getting up in the morning, ect. We took her to see 2 vets, both told us she had hip dysphasia. Being a nurse, my wife wasn’t satisfied with the level of care that the vets showed. So, she took her to see a canine orthopedic specialist from OSU (yes dogs actually have specialists). He informed us that her hips were fine....but, the ACL's in both legs were too long, causing her knee joints to be loose. Arthritis is setting in both knees. She had her fist leg surgery to correct the problem on Tuesday. In 12 weeks she has the other leg scheduled.
Whatever they gave her for pain must be some good doggie dope. It's comical to see her try to walk. She wobbles for 4 or 5 steps, and then just plops over, and her eyes kind of roll back. I built a carpeted ramp for her so she doesn’t have to do the steps, but so far I've had to carry her in and out. She weighs about 80lbs. I'm just glad I don’t have to carry Rusty....He's about 115lbs.
