There are three things we always did to raise the safety factor a bit: 1 was to always pull a bit high (I always liked to have a parachute around 3500 to 4000 ft.), 2, we never flew "tiny" parachutes, and 3, we had Cypres units on our rigs. 99% of the skydiving accidents are a result of one of those three factors (or lack thereof).
I'm sure you've seen the people at the DZ come screaming in on a 75 sq. ft. canopy, and landing the damn thing at 35 to 40 mph......jeez....that scares the shit out of me. One little gust of wind, or another jumper landing too close, and you could be instant hamburger. You'll also see the ones who like to pull at 2000 ft......if that main fails there's not much time left for a reserve pull huh?
Anyhoo, yes, we were always a little on the conservative side of things but neither of us ever had a major injury. If I could give you any advice, it would be to spend the rainy days in the hanging harness, and practice your cutaway and reserve pulls until you can do it in your sleep. Learn to pack, and get to know the gear inside and out......because every time you jump, it will save your life!
Best of luck and blue skys to you Annah! My goal in life is to be the kind of asshole my wife thinks I am.

Great vid!
Much respect for you doing that.
I did soaring for a few years (got my license too) and always had a parachute with me in the sailplane... but I never felt the urge to jump out of an airplane. And I'm glad I never had to.
