  • A Great Deer Season

Well….I have to say I’m about as proud as I could possibly be. This is my 12 year old daughters first year as a deer hunter. I sat through the Ohio Hunter’s Safety course with her (She got a 95%). I set her up with some camo’s, and taught her how to shoot a crossbow….Here is the result:

Yesterday she got her first deer…a button buck. I let her do it all. She knew when to move, when to be still, and when to make the shot. We have been out hunting 5 or 6 times this season so far. We have seen some nice bucks, but had no shot opportunities until yesterday. The best part was when we went to the check-in station. We must have had a dozen retired guys and hunters gathered around the truck congratulating her. They even posted her picture on the “buck board”.

Even though I missed the buck of a lifetime last Thursday, I have to say this season is already my most memorable. My long time hunting partner has 3 sons who are 15, 13, & 11. This year is their first year bow hunting as well. So, our focus has been mainly on the kids. Last year I was with his oldest son when he got his first deer with a gun (a button buck from the same tree stand). We stopped by their house on the way home to show them…It’s funny, I think the 2 oldest boys are afraid of being showed up by a girl.

Killer, Doug! And with a crossbow, too. You can't beat that for a first deer! With that much patience and discipline, imagine what she'll do in years to come. You can't get them started too early if they really want to do it. My daughter is only 5 and already wants to go. I promised the wife that I would never try and persuade her to show interest, but that if she did I was going to run with it. Sure enough, it's all she talks about throughout the fall months. Here she is this past Saturday after I returned with a little 7 ptr. She wanted to touch its' eye, then its' tounge, then she wanted a pic made so she could show her friends at school!

In leu of comments made in another thread about hunting, I never shoot anything that we don't eat (except for predators). The whole family loves venison. Even the wife is happy when daddy comes home with fresh loin!

Tell her congrats from the hunters of the board and to keep it up!

By the way, it looks in the pic like I can see the shot placement behind the bolt fletching. Nice!! Very Nice!!

I just bought property up by the grand canyon. Its perfect for hunting. I have not been up there recently. Last time I went up there, there were 3 hunters on the adjacent property.
          Looks like you did good.

I drive a Toyota Sequoia and my wife drives a 4-Runner. That old Tahoe is my hunting vehicle! I've had it for 9 years this year. It has about 125,000 miles on it and is well broken in. Besides, if you clean it quick enough, there's no smell.

Speaking of hauling, I just had a laugh with a co-worker about this guy we know. He killed one this weekend and came through town with it strapped to the hood of his old Volvo! I wish I had taken a pic. You might be a redneck...wait, redneck and Volvo don't belong in the same sentence!

Yep all us hunters say, way to go.

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.

Thanks guys! I started taking Lauren out with me when she was eight. We never saw any deer until this year. I too promised my wife that I wouldnt force her to pursue it. I waited for her to ask me when she could hunt. She is already asking when we can get her second tag and hit the woods again.

One of the best investments I have made was a 2 seater tree stand. Very safe and comfortable. Where I placed this one has been a productive spot.

My new picks came in yesterday too...what a coincidence:
