That is for sure in the top 10 of all the linked vids on music BBs. I am positive that they all tweaked a ball of sketch in the green room 15 minutes before they went on. I would gues that they didn't sleep for at least 4 days after the show.

George Lynch leared A LOT from Jan AKkerman

no this was definitely an old band. i remember reading it in the liner notes. young, gifted, wunderkind etc... obviously i am confusing Focus with another band, maybe Iron Butterfly?

                *EDIT*
Found it, it was Erik Brann with Iron Butterfly I am thinking of. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erik_Brann

Jan Akkerman.. man .. he was the GUY for sweep shred ideas in the early 70's. I always loved how he had such a heavy chord vibrato..really spent some time emulating that. Course, he preferred such light strings.

It cracked me up, he's chewing gum and at the end of this, he unplugs right away and it seems like he's starting to tear down gear.

Check out the other vids..House of the King has a nice solo, Sylvia.. Eruption

My friend saw Focus in concert When Hocus Pocus was the big hit. When they tried to play anything but that song, the crowd bood and made them play Hocus Pocus. I think they were the unknown opening act in that show.

ALWAYS a great vid, I watch it almost every week actually... Jan's playing is nothing short of amazing in that, even by todays standards. One of my favorite songs actually!

You guys are clearly watching something different than what I just saw.

I always liked that song but that rendition was pretty bad.
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

They always had a rather loose version of things, they had a fast version of Hocus Pocus too. The rainbow club live in '73 version, the intro was really chopped and syncopated. Much like jazz musicians playing rock, I do not think I've ever heard Jan play the same solo from the main release, usually improv in the solo sections.
There's stuff were it is sloppy and free form to a degree, very off the cuff.
I guess you have to be a Jan Akkerman fan.

I thought Hoey's version was different..much..some sweeps in it, heavier vibe.. it struck me as 'ok'. I suppose if I listened to it now I'd think it was alright. I thought the flange intro was hokey.

                              The keyboard player scares me.
