For some reason MLB is not releasing the $$ info. For those following the Matsuzaka thing Boston won with a bid of $51.5 million. Just saw it on NHK.

The Red sox won merely the the first dibs of negotiations with him by giving the 51.1 to win the rights to him in negotiations. If they can't come to an agreement, then the next highest bidder gets their turn. It could take 90 up to 110 million to sign him, I'm personally glad they won, let him have him. As great s they say he is, he's still not proven yet, and the american league east is a joke if you're a pitcher. Watchout for Philip Hughes , young yankee phenom on the rise slowly.
This is interetseting, I've never seen the Sox really put forth the Dough need ted to close the big one. Hot stove is already en fuego, gonna be a fun winter mr. Solo.

Actually I thought the same thing but according to what I read if they can't make the deal he goes back to Japan. Now it's up to Borass to be greedy but not greedy enough to break the deal. LOL
I was in Japan when he came up to the bigs. He was blowing people away batters were scared of him!1+2 = McGuirk, 2+4 = She's hot, 6-4 = Happy McGuirk

If no deal is struck in 30 days he stays in Japan. I do think 51 mill is a rediculous price to pay just to negotiate but I think this was done more to block the Yanks than to actually aquire this guy. If the negotiations fail the RedSox get their money back.
There was an article on ESPN yesterday citing the good reasons for doing this and one of them was to effectively block the yankees.Don't worry - I'll smack her if it comes to that. You do not sell guitars to buy shoes. You skimp on food to buy shoes! ~Mrs Tekky 06-03-08~

This isn't just to block the Yankees. People in Japan primarly know "of" the Yanks, and this is to give us a foothold in the Far East as far as future scouting goes. Plus he's by far the best pitcher available this year.Dreaded Silence - Boston Melancholic Metal

When all is said and done, Matsuzaka will be a Yankee, probably. I really don't know who Matsuzaka is other than the world baseball classic, but I think he'd prefer to pal around with Hideki than Manny.:ROTF: :ROTF:
Yanks starting pitching next year;

They have to be in this market otherwise they won't sell tickets. It has gotten to the point Boston fans are as bad as NY fans in demanding the quality product on the field .. Not playing post season is unacceptable hereDon't worry - I'll smack her if it comes to that. You do not sell guitars to buy shoes. You skimp on food to buy shoes! ~Mrs Tekky 06-03-08~

that's steinbrenner more than the fans. The guy wants to win, what pisses me off are the people who bag on the Yankees saying they buy the world series, well they certainly do, because win or lose, at the end of each season 'ol georgie Boy writes a huge check, I think it was in the mid 80's in millions this year for the other owners who say they can't compete because they are in a smaller market. why can't they compete? because they pocket the money from the profit raping program instead of puttingit into their team and still complain. I mean c'mon, what the fukk? 'It's not fair, it's not fair , we can't compete, oh thanks for the 12 million, i'm going to the bank to wire this to my account in the caymans, be back later"
does Budweiser write a check to Miller because they sold more beer than they did when the fiscal year is done? no. Not playing post season is unacceptable, I've had it good , and I've had it bad with the Yankees, but the owner wants to win, and that's half the battle. Boras is someone I just have to tip my hat to, how does he do it?Not helping the situation since 1965!

Wake up.
Toronto was a good example in the 90's. New stadium. Field a championship team. Then drew several million fans. Money, money, then, they didn't follow up. Had a shitty team the last decade, and it shows. Last season they tried rebuilding again. Maybe they'll keep it up this time.
Sox did it a couple of years. Like Kevin said. Fans won't except less. Management of any team can do it. All depends on priorities. Steinbrenner's want a championship.Occupation: Department Director for the Department of Redundancy Department
