Smaller market teams can't do the same that the sox and yanks have Tommy because they don't have other avenues for revenue. Both the Yanks and Sox for instance have their own flagship networks for games. Both the Yanks and Sox have huge markets for merchandising, it seems to transcend just the local market with these teams... This is why the RedSox may be trying to break into the Japanese market with this deal. They know they can clean up in an area the have neglected thus far..

It is easy to see how low budget teams simply cannot afford to compete with the Yankees and the RedSox. It becomes a big black hole for those teams. No money keeps them low on the competitive list which in turn doesn't put people in the seats.. no people, no revenue and the market gets depressed further ... They will never compete ..

Sorry but Baseball needs a salary cap ...

Remember for us it is the love of the game for them it is about the bottom line... look at Florida years ago ..didn't they buy their championship? Then what happened? They dismantled the team and tanked!

I'm glad the Red Sox won this, and I'm a Yankees fan. Not that I didn't want him, but let them spend 30 days negotiating with Boars on a contract while all the other free agents sign deals. They overpaid by 11 million over the Mets for this guy, then have to sign him to a deal. The sticking point will be the years not the money. Boras will want him to be a free agent after 3 years. Obviously the Red Sox will want him to sign a longer deal after ponying up 51 million just to talk to him. Meanwhile the Yanks have saved some money (moving Wright and Sheffield, and renegotiating with Mussina) and picked up 4 young pitchers to either use as trade bait or develop. I wouldn't be surprised if the Yanks and White Sox work a trade for one of the Sox pitchers. I'd love to see Garland with the Yanks.

Garland would look good in Yankee uniform, would'nt he?

Your making the assumption that this is the only thing the sox are working on. There's been a lot of speculation about 2 other pitchers the sox made offers too as well. I'm sure all Theos people are working on all different deals ... I don't think the 51 million will come into play in the regular payroll right now

Well they can only spend so much money can't they? I mean even the Yankees have limits even though no one wants to believe it. The 51 million is hard money that they have to budget for, and the speculation on 2 other offers is just that...speculation. The Red Sox might sign JD Drew and Matz but I'd say that would be about as major as their offseason gets.

Yes, he would! Although the talk right now is trying to bring Pettite and Clemens back as a package deal.

Philip Hughes and Wang is the future of the Yankees. I'll take Zito, he's proven, he's still young, and jason scmidt hates new York and wants to stay on the westcoast. who can name the cy Young award winner for the national league without looking at the papers? -lol

atomic fact of the day- Alfonso Soriano, my favorite Yankee when on the team, was saved by Steinbrenner from a lousy contract he he was locked into in Japan. there's lots of players over there that are possible gems. I want Sori back, but with Cano, and the way Melky played last year, we're flush with outfielders. Pitching is thename of the game. I'm sick of gambling on the overseas Asian market. Matsui is good with the bat, but Melky smokes him in the outfield inevery aspect of the game.

I'd take Zito too since the Yanks have been needing a quality lefty since Pettite left. I just don't think the Yankees will overpay for him.

I'd love to have Soriano back as well. He killed us with his free-swinging ways during the '03 World Series, but in the current lineup that could be minor.

I'm glad they have the rights to him as well. i'm looking forward to next season, I think the Yankees can bring hughes up in the middle of the season, and Pavano can make pizza in florida for all i care. Mussina pitched amazingly last year, he is so overlooked and underrated it's sickening. he's second all time in strikeout to walk ratio to Cy Young. I love the guy, he deserves a ring.

Soriano also hit some clutch homeruns as well, people always forget the good stuff.
He won game 4 against Seattle in 2001 with a walk off, also got the game winning hit in game 5 of the world series that year along with a go ahead homer off Schilling in the 01 world series , three outs away from a 4th in a row, that inning hurts more than anything for my yankee career of 41 years. he also put us ahead of the angels in '02 with a bomb in a critical game 3 whichthe yankees tanked away. He had a bad series against boston and Florida , and then he got traded for AROD. If the Yankees trade arod they are so wrong. so so wrong.

100% agree. I have no use for Pavano. I heard that the Rockies were inquiring about him. If that's true, then Cashman should take anything he can get and unload him, although they would have to pay the remainder of his salary I imagine. Can't wait for Hughes to be in the rotation.

Yes, can't trade Arod. He's just gotta get his head on straight. Even with the messed up year he had this year it was still great statistically. He shrinks though when the playoffs start, which pisses me off.

Sori's homer off Schilling in the 8th of Game 7 was awesome, just awesome. Should of never been in Game 7 though. Friggin' Pettite just didn't even come to play in Game 6.

I understand that but I'd tend to think they wouldn't be blowing 1/2 the yearly payroll on talking to someone. I would tend to think that money os coming from some other avenue.

I can't see it though Garland is the keeper on the team. Javier or Freddie are surely available though. Jose is too. Hell Buerhle is as long as we get a lefty back.

The Melky/Matsui thing is a tough choice. Pavano is an easy one.:ROTF:

It would be nice to get Sori back. No where to put him though....DH?

Yes, pitching is the name of the game and we need help in the bullpen.

I really don't think Petitte or Roger will leave Texas. Slight chance on Petitte, but I don't think any chance on Roger. (unless his son plays elsewhere).
