Just when I thought people couldn't be more ridiculous!
This is nuts! What amazes me is every time one of these things are released it causes problems like this. Why the fuck would they want to release these things in limited numbers?
Anyone and I mean anyone who would drop work, school, whatever just to camp out for a week for a video game needs to get laid then locked away from normal people!!
SONY is losing several hundred per unit. Thats close to $100mil they lost on the 400k units they produced in the US. Because of the PS3's high price and the fact that MS beat them to punch with xbox360; SONY could only have hoped for this kind of demand, but probably didnt expect it. They would have lost a lot more money if they made twice as many units and only sold 1/2 of them.
SONY will probably trickle the PS3 to the market over the next year to keep the hopefulls hopeful while they build up their inventory, and then release them just in time for next christmas.

Even crazier than the fact that the current high bid is over $20k is that the seller says that he will include the receipt, which clearly shows that he paid a little over $800 for it.

I agree with you guys, but if you could buy one and flip it for say $5k, then you could buy a lot more nice gear than you could with $800.
Again though, I wonder what the completion rate is on these $10-$20K Ebay sales. I bet a lot get relisted after filing a NPB and then the relist will end at a more realistic price. I'm sure they still make a good profit oin the flip because it's like scalping, but are there really people who will actually pay $20,000 for an $800 item because they can't wait?
its one helluva return on an investment if you can get those super inflated prices. I think this one is different fromthe 360 because from what I hear..Sony does not have a supply issue, there will be plenty avail in retail stores throughout the holidays.

Just the opposite.
They only built 400,000 for the US market.
They are loosing almost $300 per unit at the current price.
They cost roughly $800 each to build.
Sony is loosing money on the units right now. They hope to make it up in game sales, which are historicaly overpriced to begin with.
Fucking ridiculous! Humanity, and the stupidity of the human race rearing it's ugly fuckin' head over a goddamn game console. And I don't care who said it here that it's not just a game console....it's a fucking inadamant object that people are getting robbed, shot, trampled for etc.....
This is why I'm going back to the simpler "stone-ages" approach. I have a PS1 and a Nintendo Gamecube that I am completely satisfied with. I have a DVD player so I don't need one of those included in my game system, as well as a slew of audio CD players...so no need for one of those EITHER in my game system. Blue Tooth?...I have wireless controllers for my PS1 already...so people?!?!?!
I stood in a very short line for my 360 for the second round. There were 12 people in line and 24 consoles.
It died 3 months later and I bought another one (still haven't sent the first one back ) - I just walked into the store and they had dozens of them in the rack.
The thing that gets me is they know people are going to be mugged and even murdered for them, so why are they being sold at midnight? And why is there never extra security (cops) in the parking lot?
As for why they only release limited quantities on launch day - it's because the prototypes they had built to make sure it was going to work were not made by the same Chinese facility that will be mass-producing the retail machines, so there's the possibility of power supplies catching fire, boards frying because someone forgot to remove the mylar fan cover, etc etc.
Tons of 360s have been sent in for repair - so many that MS has extended the warranties of every 360 made before July 06 until August of 07!
The same thing will happen here - houses burning down, consoles melting, etc etc.
BluRay is useless right now, because no one is going to make a game big enough and detailed enough to utilize every MB of the disc (music doesn't count). Oblivion will be huge, but not big enough to fill the disc completely, and BlueRay's only advantage is increased storage capacity. The only way that matters in video games is larger game worlds. You can't use better models and textures if the processor can't handle them, and I seriously doubt the 360 or PS3 processor will handle the high-poly meshes you find in Final Fantasy movies.
I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood
