But, I knew pretty quickly thery weren't serious musicians and moved on.
sorry Johnny but you are wrong, there are tons of easier ways to get rich, if you don't take music seriously then you wouldn't even bother playing an instrument.
Good songwriting comes from serious musicians...KISS can write good songs.
As far as the skills go, Paul is really a very good singer, he can do more than just rock and roll, he is amazingly good gospel singer. Gene can play some very good grooves on his bass. Peter is a very solid rock drummer, good hit and good meter. Ace can be sloppy, but he had one of the best vibratos in he 70's and his lead lines are absolutely amazing and very memoriable. Marty Friedman, Dime, Ed, Paul Gilbert, Ty Tabor, John Norum, Jeff Watson etc. weren't only a fans of Ace's image but they also stoled a lot of licks from him and used them all the time.

Ehh, if you say you know you're not a lead player, then don't get up and make a point of doing "look at me" lead guitar solo that is embarrassing.
Yeah, Kiss played a big part of sparking my interest "as a child' in the guitar area. But, I knew pretty quickly thery weren't serious musicians and moved on.
They are like the WWF of rock. Just a show. But, they knew how to write a few hooks and made a LOT of dough and somehow, got a LOT chicks. Guess that is the main idea anyways, so kudos to them.
Plenty of "great" players play to no one. I see Yngwie playing to 400-600 people at shows here these days and Kiss still plays to thousands wherever they play... Gotta hand it to them I spose.

I saw Al DiMeola recently. There was maybe 75 people there. He was over an hour late, snickered about playing "those old electic" songs, and played 4 lengthy solo acoustic pieces that were purely self indulgent noodling. The show was otherwise great but it demonstrates that if you don't play music people actually want to hear it really doesn't fucking matter what your actual capabilities are.
As for Yngwie, most of his material after the first two discs is either really bad or very tired. The last two times I saw him he was drunk and disrespectful towards his crew and band. And his song choices weren't great either - nobody at either of those shows wanted to here him do a shitty job covering Hendrix.
Kiss plays music people want to hear. Kiss puts on a great visual show. Kiss plays for the audience - they understand who pays the bills.
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

Kiss wrote some good songs early on. Most were crap. There were seriously into getting the band thing, but not serious musicians.
In 73 when they started out, getting rich with a good band under the right circumstances was a possible. Nowdays definitely not. Then, it was possible though. And, they had the fire in their eyes and worked hard to get there. And they found their niche, exploited it and did get very rich.
For Paul and Gene, music was pretty much a tool to make the money. In all the hundreds of interviews I"ve read, I've NEVER seen them express an interest in the writing, the music or playing well. It was mostly money and chicks. Strictly business. No problem with that IMO. Just not my idea of how it should be for me. HOWEVER, notice the lack of "richness" on my end, hahaha...
And yes, I also stole a ton of stuff from them . Considering I emulated them (no make up tho) for 6 hours a day for prolly a year or so, that would be a given. I know they influenced a lot of people.
I've seen them live quite a few times. And they are not all that impressive musicianwise I assure you. Passable for the most part, but I've seen some pathetic moments. Peter was barely passable. Ace was hit or miss (some real clinkers there), Paul seemed pro enough in his role, Gene can play bass and is assuredly one smart savvy dude. The best musicians were the hired pros they'd have here and there.
I've met Gene, Ace and Paul. Gene was pretty cool, Ace was very very cool, Paul, definitely not so cool and he's starting to look like Micheal Jackson from so much surgery.
Sorry Tommy, IMO, not one of the ultimate rock voices. Actually, he'd never come to mind if I were thinking of ultimate rock voices at all. Not bad at all. Just not ultimate.
Again, I idolized those guys as a youngster and would still maybe go see them again. But, it would be more like maybe going to see monster trucks or the circus haha...
I remember Paul Stanley on TV talking about thier Farewell Tour that started in April 2000 saying a band shouldn't go our on a farewell tour and not retire afterwards. He claimed they weren't going to do that.
Nice ploy to get people out who normally wouldn't have gone. I fell for it.
Ok, I'm dating myself, but I got into music in general as a young child after seeing KISS perform on get this......"THE SONNY AND CHER SHOW HALLOWEEN SPECIAL!!!!!!"
I give many props to KISS and their completely amazing career. When I was very young I remember my Dad saying see if KISS is selling out casino show rooms in 20 years like Johnny Mathis does......to this day I pick on him about it. I say, "hey Dad, it's 30 years later and you were right, KISS isn't selling out casino show rooms.....they're still selling out arenas!!!!!" lol
Love 'em or hate 'em, they obviously know what they're doing.
Transitioning from Retired Musician from cover bands to a Full time vocalist/frontman/guitarist in an original and covers band....it's been a while and this should get NASTY!
[quote=Mayday;819200]1st off I didn't tell you to stfu
2nd you misquoted me in a sense. My point was Paul has ALWAYS admitted to not being a lead guitarist. Would you rip a rythmn guitarist in YOUR own band because he didn't play lead?
That whole thing was for asthetics for the crowd, christ only 5 % of the crowd probably had any clue as to even what he was doing technically ..[/quot
1st off i didnt say you told me to shut the fuck up!i was sticking up to the original poster who has every right to say what he likes about someones playing and got the normal response from forum members who dismissed him as a bedroom guitarist living at home with his parents.
2nd i didnt quote you at all...lol..i believe cleveland metal recieved that honer and if you look at my 1st post you will see that i said what you have just said about bands having lead guitarists. My other guitarist in the band plays lead too so i cant rip into him
i know the crowd couldnt give a toss about what paul does or doesnt do with his guitar-but the original poster is not the crowd and if he says it was shite then let him say it with out having to knock him down to living with parents level
I actualy said it wasnt that bad!i cant see a lot wrong with it to be honest but i am not going to bully someone who says it was rubbish.Big deal,we all have different tastes in music and if he thinks he shouldnt have got paid then fair enough i dont think that but,ahh fuvk it you know mate
Funny, i remember reading an interview about when they were auditioning guitarists to take Ace's place when they took the makeup off, and they said there were dozens of guys who could do the karate licks on the fretboard but that they couldn't play their way out of a 4 or 8 bar blues jam to save their life and that it's just not possible for you to be in the band if you can't change keys, and not know basic guitar progressions no matter how many notes per millimetersonic sound of light per second 128th 4 gig omatic notes you can play on a guitar. They are better players than you think, I had front row on halloween at Irvine meadows on halloween, and 7th row on halloween two years later at Dodger stadium. Paul's the stuff I tell ya.
Complaining about his solo is about as relevant as complaining about Michael Jordan's sloppy amatuerish aftergame interview in which he had 100 points. Maybe he shouldnt get paid either. I am sure there are great actors who would do a better job, but, you know...........
I was into Kiss alive album before I played guitar. Once everyone and their brother had the dolls, t-shits, lunch boxes etc it just wasnt cool to me anymore. I'm an against the grain kinda guy I guess...I dont like Led Zepplin very much either.
Whether Paul can wail or not means nothing...I'll take the live version of Detroit Rock City over a solo anyday
