When I was very young I remember my Dad saying see if KISS is selling out casino show rooms in 20 years like Johnny Mathis does......to this day I pick on him about it. I say, "hey Dad, it's 30 years later and you were right, KISS isn't selling out casino show rooms.....they're still selling out arenas!!!!!" lol
Ha ha, that's great...what does Dad say to that?

I grew up listening to my dad's Cream, Sabbath, Deep Purple, Moody Blues, Eagles albums when the kid next door started listening to KISS. He was a few years older and so I figured everything he did was pretty cool, but even at that age (I would've been around 7, I guess?) I couldn't understand the fuss. Richard's dad was driving him up to Sydney to see the concert and he was wearing KISS Ts and giving me a hard time for not liking the band.

But the guitar playing I was hearing on Sunshine of Your Love & Crossroads, and Bat Out of Hell and Hotel California just seemed so much cooler than anything playing on Richard's record player.

Plus the Kabuki makeup seemed so silly. I was never much into facepainting as a kid.

Fuck yeah. Bat out of hell. Todd Rundgren really rips it up on that one. Pretty underrated player imo

Ya know I thought about this deeply last night. I've always had this pet peeve about musicians stating this one sucks that one sucks. Metal musicians in general who are into shredding can sometimes be the worst because anything that is simply written is considered crap to them.

Music is an art and its beauty will not always be in everybodys eye. The fact is though that it is an art form and anything different is always cool. There are plenty of musicians who technically are not profcient players but they are being creative in their own ways and that makes it original...

I never cared for Kurt Cobain and in all honesty from a talent standpoint I felt his guitar skills were not that great. But that fact is, he wrote great hooks and told a good story in his writings ..Nirvana stood the test of time because of that ..

I don't think anyone being creative in their own way is bad thing....it is called art ..

music is an art, art is a form of expression, there is no rules how you can express yourself, no one shouldn't tell you how you can or how you can't create art

I agree 100%, while technical skill is a great asset to have on tap, its how you artistically use your 'chops'. Green Day ( as an example) may not have blowaway guitar solos but they do have immense appeal to an audience because they write music which can relate on an artistic/social level rather than a technical one.
Whatever limitation they may have in comparison to another they worked around or they just make themselves different enough so it set a new standard to be compared to.

I do not like to use terms that negate, justify, label and entrap even tho it can be an easy mindset be impressed upon and have yourself fall into.

People really used to rip on Kiss. When Guitar Player featured them on the cover of GP, there was a huge cry of sellout involved. Guys who were playing Yes and Kansas were saying they could not even play at a basic level and should not appear in such a 'musician' oriented mag.

                    Sorry Kev, Cobain sucked. :ROTF:

Your point is right on though. In general, I try not to say anyone sucks (but I do of course). It really makes no sense to bash any art form. The one that cracks me up the most is when metal heads and rappers both say the other genre sucks because it sounds like repetitive garbage with all the lyrics just being shouted/screamed.

Paul has always admitted he was not a lead guitarist. He writes a good hook and has a powerful voice. The real question is how many people here can say they inspired a whole generation of musicians? Love em or hate em they made it and they are still doing it after 30 years..... I for one wouldn't be a guitarist if I hadn't seen them on TV in 1976....

Yep...I was 8 and saw them on the Paul Lynde Halloween Special.

No, I'm almost sure it was either Sonny and Cher or just Cher. I know my mom despised Paul Lynde.

My Dad just keeps on saying that I'm never gonna let him live that comment down. My parents actually watch Family Jewels regularly....which I find hilarious!
Transitioning from Retired Musician from cover bands to a Full time vocalist/frontman/guitarist in an original and covers band....it's been a while and this should get NASTY!
