Hell yeah. I grew up in Catholic school, and somehow they found out my Dad would punish us with a belt. They brought him into the office and the principal told him she didn't think it was an appropriate way to discipline his children, and he said "What? You used to whack me on the side of the head with a ruler, don't tell me how to raise my kids!"

What kills me is this one:
Scenario: Billy breaks a window in his father's car and his Dad gives him a whipping.
1973 ........Billy is more careful next time, grows up normal, goes to college, and becomes a successful businessman.
2006…….Billy's Dad is arrested for child abuse. Billy removed to foster care and joins a gang. Billy's sister is told by state psychologist that she remembers being abused herself and their Dad goes to prison. Billy's mom has affair with psychologist.
Upon further investigation, the parent(s) get arrested, ALL children are taken out of the home and placed.
It's total bullshit!!

I got whacked from time to time as a kid - nothing major. It didn't teach me anything other than what my threshold for pain was and to be more careful to not get caught next time.
My kids have gotten their fair share of corporal punishment. I've never been arrested. Why? Well because I didn't beat the living fuck out of them.
Plenty of kids ARE way better off in foster care. Sure, you can point to a 60 minutes expose or some other thing about how fucked up it all is but leaving kids in abusive situations is totally fucked.
Nothing good comes of a parent beating the shit out of a kid. You can look back fondly all you want to 1973 but you are kidding yourself if you think things turned out so great for those kids. Either way it sucks for the for the kid to get beat.I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

FWIW, I was in high school in 1979 and grew up in VA. If you pulled up to the school with a rifle in a gun rack, the police would have been at the school instantly. Maybe in some rural or small town that was acceptable but not a fucking chance where I grew up. BTW, it was a couple miles from the NRA headquarters so don't think there weren't guns around.I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

I think there's a difference between disciplining a child within reason and beating the fuck out of them. Kids are allowed to sue parents for that kind of thing, and can win. Just like fistfights at school, I think the way fistfights used to be taught people a lot. Nowadays you get knives and guns pulled on you.
Cheers,
Nick
