  • Website Gurus, help please.

For about the umpteen billionth time I've taken the homepage to my website down. I have a select few customers who aren't really thrilled about having their projects open (in detail) for public view. On one hand I can understand it, but on the other hand I think some of these guys are being over-anal about stupid shit, and they're really taking away some of my advertising in a sense. Anyway, is there a way I can password protect a folder on my website? In other words, if someone goes to the web page, then clicks on a certain link....they would have to put in a password to see that page?
My goal in life is to be the kind of asshole my wife thinks I am.

wouldnt a hidden direcotry be a lot simpler!?? Thats wha tI do with my web page for pictures and that people dont need to see.

Why on earth would you want to hide all that nice work, I cant understand why people would want their nice stuff hidden, unless they dont want others seeing it until it's done?!?

You can do it with a simple .htaccess. I have a script that will allow you make passwords and protect any directory you want. You can have it for free if you want it and I'll even set it up for you.

I hear you - same thing happened to me last year from a guy that bought a body from me - he was making knockoffs of a very popular Charvel re-issue. When I posted the completed guitar pic of a simular project he had forwarded to me (mind you, I had just completed the site and gave some random pics to my site developer for the "customer projects" section, of which his project was one), somehow word got back to him that I was using his work to "sell stuff"...which led to 3 to 4 of his cronies/idiots on the board he frequents to send me a slew of "F you" emails. Real nice - made my day.

I think he realized that he was wrong, ended up buying a neck from me, and was cool about it finallly (unlike the clowns he had sic'd on me), but the damage was done.

I took down the page, just not worth the trouble...

Yes, kind of a similar deal here. The factors here are that I don't do work for the general public, nor do I advertise. All of the work I do is for a small handfull of private collectors and/or re-sellers. The website was originally done as advertisement, and it worked out well for building my customer base in the beginning. Eventually, it became a place purely for the customers to see the progress pics of their vehicles. Now, I don't want to completely take it down, but I am going to make the "current projects" folders private. That way, if the customer wants to check up on progress, he can, and if he wants someone else to see the pics, he can give them the password. Otherwise, the only thing viewable to the general public will be completed projects. I guess it's a long story, but let's just say that these guys are just as bad as guitar collectors!!

Thanks a bunch St. James.....PM sent.

As the saying goes, "The customer is always right...even when he's not!". Who knows, it might increase business!

                  Good luck!
