  • Introducing Buddy....

The newest addition to our family. He's an 11 week old purebreed Cocker Spaniel pup. We brought him home last night. I guess you could call him an early christmas present but my wife and I really wanted to add to our family and we felt ready to get one.

So far everything is pretty normal. He is obviously getting used to his surroundings and is somewhat scared but he is pretty playful. I believe he came from a big litter.

I'll post more later but I wanted to share our new addition with my online family.

    Any tips?

Congrats!!! I had a Cocker Spaniel for 14 years before I got my Goldens. He was a good dog. A little hyper, and he barked a lot, but a lot of fun.

Nothing like a new puppy for Christmas. Enjoy him!

              Cockers are great!
Just make sure you keep his ears clean. I mean this. They can get infected really fast, so make it a daily thing.

              Here's my boy Milo.

Here he is now. He's a big boy.

Congrats! Make sure doesn't turn into one of those mean Cockers; some of them can get pretty nasty. My aunt and uncle have one... he's crazy!

The mean ones tend to come from pet stores that don't screen their breeders.
They are so in-bred it's not funny. Puppy mills make me sick and destroy the reputation of good dogs.
My Cocker Spaniel comes from a reputable breeder. We were on a waiting list for a long time as she only breeds her dogs once or twice a year.
AKC registration and proof of liniage (sp?) are key things to look for.
Milo is the most lovable Cocker I've ever met. A little too lovable sometimes , but he's great. We heard him growl for the first time ever while he was having his annual checkup. I don't think he cares for people in white lab coats poking and proding him.
He is so gentle... even when my 3 year old chasing him around.

fukkin right, our neighbor supposedly had one from a "sweet" bloodline and it was nasty as hell. Didn't help that they spoiled the crap out of it

Buddy's a sweety but he looks sad!

                        Congrats on a beautiful pup!

You have to pick out a good name to go on his AKC papers. Our cocker was:

"Sir Oboe Snert West" (Snert was Hagar the Horrible's dog)

                          Our goldens are:

Ginger - "Lauren's Gingerbread Cookie West" (female)

Rusty - "Doug's Rusty Remington West" (male...and he lives up to his name)

He is pretty shy so far. He seems to like me. We took him for a good cleaning because he pissed himself in the car on the way home on my lap. The breeder gave us something to put between me and the pup on the way home so I would not get soaked.

The breeder gave us some paperwork and is sending us more regarding his pedigree, AKC registration, etc. We are going to go to the vet in 40 minutes or so.

I put him in the kennel for 30 minutes so I could do some stuff. He has started to whimper a little bit.. Its cute although I am not sure what to do. Should I let him whimper for a little longer or go downstairs now. I am thinking if I go downstairs now he'll get used to it or something. I know he is scared but well..

He did start eating and drinking a little bit which is nice.

Budman- He does look kind of sad in that pic but he looks pretty cute now that he is all cleaned up.

                              Absolutely adorable.

To reduce the whimpering in his crate, try taking an old towel and have everyone in the house wipe themselves with it and leave it in the crate. Make sure everyone uses a different spot on the towel.
Being that young and fresh from the litter situation, familiar smells will help make him more comfortable.Another good trick is to keep a wind up alarm clock wrapped up to muffle the sharpness of the sound near his cage as they are used to hearing a heartbeat when they sleep.
Bon Jovi is like a frozen Coca Cola.. It's cool, it's crunchy, but when all is said and done it is still pop....
