As some of you may know, I´ve been unemployed for about 1.5 years. It was kind of fun not having any responsibilities, but it wasn´t all that productive.
Today I started my new job in the RMA department of www.pearl.de. I´m on the technical staff, my job is to test any and every possible item a customer might return to see if it can be sold normally, sold at a discount for damaged packaging, or should be scrapped /parted out or returned to the original manufacturer. One major advantage of this is that if there are any funky gizmos out there that I don´t know about, that should change pretty fast.
Another cool thing about this is that while Pearl is one of Europe´s oldest and largest mail order IT-shops, they sell a whole crapload more. And that crapload of wierd /stupid /interesting /hilarious gadgets and toys is just a really great touch as far as stress /tension, mood /attitude, and general workplace climate goes. Got cold feet?? Test a set of USB Footwarmers. Coffee cold? See if a USB Cup Warmer helps. Feeling lonely? Try out a clucking, talking chicken. Colleague 50 feet away needs a roll of "To be scrapped" stickers? Why not fly them over with the RC helicopter that you´re just about to test anyway.... and when someone on the way back yells out "I´m testing a spycam, land over here dude".... well, you get the picture... I think insanity is a prerequisite for employment there, so I´m in great company
And of course there´s the situational comedy of something like "How the blazes do we test a solar powered Mole repeller when it´s black as night and the ground is frozen???" :ROTF:
Oh, and every one of those cheap chinese guitars we sell in those starter packs officially became my problem as well, lol... sometimes I just ought to shut up
Seriously, while the train connections aren´t too great, I´m really stoked to have this job, esp. because Pearl has a consistent history of having the good "loaners" transferred to company employment with a decent pay raise over what the personnel management company pays
I will now drink a beer or 2 or 3 in celebration
