I took the Law Enforcement written test at the Employment Office a few years ago when I was looking for a job. I made 98/100 (low scores for not typing the report fast enough ). I went for an interview at the local "Correctional Facility" (more like a storage pen for the overflow from Memphis).

Basically it was $1500 a month to guard gangbangers and such that Memphis didn't have room for.

I almost took it until I asked them about how many incidents of inmates attacking guards, and they had 4 a month at least, and the last 2 resulted in the guard getting killed.

Matt, was the facility you went to privately run, or was it a state run prison? Privatized prisons suck. The "guards" there have no law enforcement powers at all.

Starting salary in NJ for the Department of Corrections here is over 40k a year. Not great, but not bad either. NJ State C.O.'s are law enforcement, so we have full LE power.

I make my 5 year anny in March. This year I get 15 vacation days, 15 sick days and 3 personal days. I am carrying over 8 vacation days, 21 sick and 5 comp days from 2006. Add in the health benefits and pension and it is not a bad job.

Argos states that his departmaent is well funded , that certainly isn't the case here..it may be with Jrnic, who seems to be much more content with his admins..for valid reasons ..which is the way it should be..

Two different worlds there really..I don't know a single person on my department who has the time or sanity to be a volunteer fireman..he seems to be in a very good position..and that's great!!

Like I said our retirement / Pension fund and acumulated hours on the books is like no job I know..it's a very stable and secure income..that's for sure.

Too bad these guys haven't got a raise since '94 and that was only 3%, and nothing since..I get a raise whenever they do..

I get a 3% COLA raise every year..and with that I make make now than I did when I was bustin' hump in a zone car..

Argos, you seem to be in a much better position..I would definitely go for the ride along , and if you like it go for it..it is a great job..

Unfornutaely..in a city like mine they demand stats but throw you under the bus so quickly whenver some asshole makes a unfounded complaint..it usually never goes anywhere, but just going thru the hassle is a real pain in the ass..

The MOST important thing IMO is making good reports..that's CYA, cover your ass..and like jrnic mentioned NEVER become complacent..nothing is "routine"..you always hear the term "routine traffic stop" in the media..well there is no such animal..

In my city..most people you stop don't have a license, is suspended or have a warrant..The comon thing was asking for their drivers license, they would alway pull out their welfare state ID card...we call that the ghetto Drivers License..

when I retired I had approx 1500 hours on the books..and I got that all in one lump sum..that was NICE!!

I wouldn't do it. Have yet to meet a cop that isn't pissed off their high school football career didn't pan out. That should tell you something about what type of person the job attracts. IMHO of course.

:ROTF: You shouldn't generalize like that. I never heard anyone at work lamenting a football contract. Out of the couple hundred officers I work with there is only one guy that had a shot at basketball. He is 6'9" tall, I forget what happened though. Something with his leg.

Those are the exception and not the rule. Those types usually end up getting weeded out pretty quick, especially today.

The ONLY reason I am not a cop is I know I would end up in a shootout and and up having to deal with an innocent getting hurt. A lot of cops end up never recovering from something like that. Just the emotional scars from a perfectly legal and warranted shooting can put a cop over the edge. I was watching A&E about the famous LA shootout. I think it was the same one they have been showing for years, only thing is they updated the commentary at the end and stated that 6 of the officers involved in the shooting have taken thier own lives.

The don't get weeded out, they end working for the Sterling Police Department or for Bob Bolish in Logan County.

Coody and Smithgall are just a few that should be named. I know first hand that they let athletes off for DUI's yet come after me for tinted windows and then search my ride for drugs. Bunch of puerco puntos. I'm over it though. LOL

Dude, I was a burn out pot smokin' , shreddin' metal head in high school and all I cared about was pussy, partying and metal..that barely made it out of high school..if it wasn't for my dad's foot up my ass..


IMHO..You have no clue what the fuck your talkin' about..this is like any fucking job..there is good and bad people in all walks of life..but I met the best people I will ever meet on that job..that risk their asses to save people like you and your family
