My rather unexpected dilemma...

> I go to work today,in a decent mood,and get told that I am no longer needed,with nothing more than a vague explanation. I was told by the manager that the GM over the whole company recommended to him that he let me go. The conversation with the GM immediately afterwards was not much help either,that he DIDN'T recommend that he let me go,but to do what he thought was best. I was sick at my stomach,and confused to say the least. This wasn't a real good job,so he probably did me a favor,but it accompished my primary goal,keeping my child support paid. Further complicating the situation is my current girlfriend,7 months+ pregnant. She had a doctor's appointment today,and complications have arisen that are keeping her in the hospital overnight,and possibly bringing my new daughter early,or best-case her going home but confined to bedrest. Meaning that whatever money I had coming in would be used to keep her fed and the bills paid,like a man should. Me getting fired under unexplained circumstances is liable to cause her to pop a gasket,and possibly further complications like premature labor,or something more disastrous. She keeps listening to her more vindictive,man-savvy female friends,who keep trying to talk her into pressing state-supported child support,even though we are still together,and have no intentions of abandoning her and my child financially,and this could push her that way even further,especially if she takes me getting fired without reason as me just up and quitting. My parents are also a factor. I've been renting the other side of their duplex since my divorce,and Mom especially likes to hound me about getting a better job,staying away from my "dope-fiend" friends,and that kind of shit,which if not handled carefully,could lead to me being out on my ass. My car is broke down,but I can get it fixed with my tax return in a few days. This creates a hardship of it's own,with no vehicle to look for work outside of town,since good paying work is hard to find here. The one thing I have going for me,skill in machine work and a good head for that kind of thing,can't help me yet because I haven't graduated school yet,all the local shops want at least Machinist I certification,still a session away,or 4 years on the job. No one around here plays pool much anymore,at least not for money,and the oil-well of easy cash to be made in the college hangout in a neighboring town has been drained because word has spread out there that unless they are a legit pro-level player,they can't beat me. That rules out playing 20 a game 9-ball,which at one time was a nice 500 or more a week side-gig. I've been preparing to look for a better job,but not certain I can pass the pisser yet,which any decent job is sure to ask for. Can't say I haven't been there a time or two myself.
Just keep your head up and think positive. You will find another job.
As for the piss test... can't help ya there... only time can settle that one.
If your GF is that unstable about the relationship that she would side with her friends, it wasn't meant to be.
I won't flame as I've been in your shoes before... almost... didn't have a kid coming, but the rest was there. Renting a house from one of the future in-laws was so much fun. They're nice to me now, but it was a different game back then.

Sorry to hear that. Alot of companies like to keep people as "At Will" employees. Which means they can "let a person go" for no reason at all! That totally sucks...don't take it personally. Get out there and find a new job ASAP. Just remind yourself this "At Will" stuff is B.S.

I agree it was a long story, but this is a guy's life here in disarray. He's just looking for a little support from people who will listen. Imagine this was your situation for a moment ... wouldn't you look to talk with someone ?

we are looking for new employees where i work. it starts @ $15 hr, but you get heath ins., vacation, and it is a union job.

i my point is that i gave the 2 guys that came a drug test. so first things are first. get clean so that you have a chance for a decent job.

Sorry to hear that. Bear in mind that though you are stressed out, it sounds like you expect some shit from your parents. Best to suck it up, hang your head and be humble. Blowing your stack in an argument will only make it worse. Since you seem to think it's coming, be ready.

Go apply for unemployment now. It's not enough but something's better than nothing and there will be a delay before benefits start. At least they will have to tell the employment commission why they let you go. Not giving you a reason is very strange, I've never heard of that before.

Definitely get straight and apply somewhere that doesn't test in the meantime. Again, a shitty job that pays half what you need still means you're only half as far behind, until you find something decent. It will also bring you support from the people like your family who seem to be on your ass right now. They will figure at least you're trying, and then they'll be a lot more supportive.

Don't alienate your support system just because you're understandably upset.
