I thought 2006 was a pretty decent year... Psycroptic, Decapitated, Ihsahn, Blind Guardian, Goatwhore, Skinless, Anata, Sahg, Mastodon, Daylight Dies, Insomnium, Belphegor, Grave, Hammers of Misfortune, Tool, Torture Killer, Benighted, all were pretty strong releases. And good efforts from stalwarts Slayer, Deicide and Vader. There were others, can't think right now..

Only real lame-o's were Lamb of God and Shadows Fall.

For solos, Deicide - Stench of Redemption is just stuffed with good 80's style shred, really well executed and memorable.

      Acoustic Verses rules. Especially "Alone".
Tchort's songs are always the best on any Green Carnation release for me. Acoustic Verses is good all the way through but Alone and Sweet Leaf are my two favs, both written by Tchort. I do like High Tide Waves alot though. I can't wait for Light of Day, Day of Darkness Part 2.

One album I did like from 2006 with some awesome guitarwork was All That Remains "Fall of Ideals". Good stuff on that. Six is a terrific song.

Why is it the only thing I recognize there is Tool ??

2006 was an excellent year in general for non-mainstream metal. A lot of great albums came out. Unfortunately, a lot of the "bigger names" released terrible albums.

Album of the year for me was Green Carnation's "Acoustic Verses". So clearly not much lead work in that one. This year is gonna be good though.
The best solo of 2006 was in the intro to episode 6... "Crush My Battle Opponent's Balls" by Swisgaar Swigelf, the world's fastest guitarist.
