Him being 17, if the union doesn't want to step up for him, he'd have to get his parents to file suit on his behalf. So if they're not behind him he'd have to wait until he's 18 to do so himself.

It's unfair, but not everything that's unfair in life can be legally enforced. wait til the first time your girlfriend fucks your best friend, you'll see what I mean!

Just kidding I am saying that because I recently had to cut my long hair short but I do get a wider audience of girls talking to me when I have my hair short. Instead of just the punk rock skanks.
Punk rock and metal skanks beat hip-hop skeezes every time!

Very true, but at least he will know the standard/rules regarding hair. He can take it from there.

If it says in the rulebook that hair must be above the collar or tied back, then tie the hair back. If they make a fuss, have them point out where in the rulebook it says that men must have conservative haircuts. If they still insist, go to their manager (district/regional manager). If they are an equal opportunity employer, then they cannot fire you based on a haircut unless customers are complaining about it.

Of course, it also helps if you're a good worker and someone they'll think twice about firing.

Unfortunately long hair on guys is still largely frowned upon, so the Union probably won't take your side, but I would ask them about why they're so worried about the conservative image with the guy that wears lip gloss being so visible. Ask about the unwed mothers that work there as well. That's not conforming to the "conservative image" they appear to cherish.

Then of course they'll say you have an attitude problem, to which you reply "yes, I have a problem with YOUR attitude". Then they'll throw the old cliche about "no respect for authority", to which you reply "you haven't earned my respect by cramming your conservatism down my throat".

You'll most likely be fired, so have another job lined up (that doesn't mind the hair) and a definite starting date.

Well, the store isn't union, but that shouldn't mean it should be a dictatorship. It's pretty fucked up. Right now, I'm only working to pay for car expenses and I have enough saved up to pay for insurance and gas for about 8 months. I would have quit a long time ago and found a new job since this one sucks balls, but the reason why it's hard to decide is because I'm getting $8.40/hr which was a dollar higher than minimum wage when I was hired (no up to $7.65/hr). Anyways, I still don't know what the fuck to do.

I've thought about it more, and I say cut your hair or find a new job. Life is too short.

I had hair down past my chest for many years. Put it this way....wheather its legal or not, they will find another way to dismiss or harass you if you don't abide by the rules. Legal???? who knows but even if it is not do you see you or your parents paying for a lawyer to fight it? Probably not. The long hair thing is cool and some chicks dig it...some dont..but if you want to wear it that way suck up the fact that your book will be judged by it's cover by many people...hell I can remember people at the 7-11 locking their doors in their car when I walked by them to go into the store...shit like that and jobs who dont like the image....you'll have to suck it up. I worked as a manager at a pizze joint and the owner made me wear a hairnet Needless to say as I became more of a professional in the work world I have cut my hair..good luck with the battle

Firstly, followthereaper, sorry for your troubles. It's been a long time, but I remember facing similar rubbish. Though I was getting it from school, not work. It was harder to dodge school than work, but not as immediately financially damaging and, actually, somewhat rewarding on an emotional - if not educational - level.

Like everyone else said, you're stuck with: get another job and chuck the current one; or stick it out until you bend or they do. Unfortunately, unless you're a budding rocket scientist, when you're 17 even the law couldn't save you (if there was one).

If it's any consolation, I think pretty much every long haired guy gets this nonsense one way or another. Even if you don't end up with it directly in work/school/whatever, you'll get people (friends, family) telling you it'll effect your ability to get ahead in life.

And you know what? Some of it's true. There are buffoons out there who'd overlook your talent and usefulness, instead having a bug-bear about your appearance. A fine example of the bug-bear people would be members of the financial industry. However, as m2pmd70 has said, if you're talented and skilled, they'll get over it. Unless you want to work for Goldman Sachs. They'll NEVER get over it.

If you do stick it out with the job, try not to get bitter about it. Unless you go bald early. Then get bitter. So very, very bitter.

If you do keep the hair, however, be warned: barring mother nature removing the option, out of stubborness you will insist on keeping it forever. Trust me, I know.

Finally, unless you're planning to become a rock god, if you plan to keep long hair indefinitely, some careers are more long-hair friendly. For example: systems administration. Companies know they'd fail overnight without their sys admin guys, but even the short haired ones are trouble. They're likely to speak Klingon to each other in the corridors, debate the finer points of Battlestar Galactica in the office, and generally act shamefully. So companies keep them in the basement. Against that backdrop, long hair doesn't even register. I can also recommend Academia. In Academia it's the ones that don't have personal foibles that you worry about. They're the freeky ones.

What if you hired a drummer for your metal band, and he dressed reasonable metal (ads for band members sometimes specify "look")

Then you and you band get a great gig for next month opening for a national act coming to your area

Your drummer gets a haircut and all of a sudden starts dressing like this:

You know you'd fire him before the big gig!

does having short hair affect your ability to play your guitar? there's your answer .

No, but it makes me feel like a moron while headbanging... Oh yeah, that's a stupid thing anyway, but I still love it. I just like long hair because you could hide behind it when necessary and discreetly listen to headphones.

"Get a haircut!!". Been there done that a couple of times. That was in the '70's. The last time it happened, I got it cut. My boss of bosses was a jarhead. I went to work with my new hair. I told my boss if he tells me to cut again I would quit. He did and so did I. That's when I was young with no responsibilities. Was my hair worth the job? I don't know. I tried to comply but it wasn't "enough". I guess the question is: Do you need this job? And if it is, just get a fukking haircut.
I am a true ass set to this board.

i know how you feel. i couldn't look in the mirror after i first cut mine. but by fuck, i didn't miss ripping the malted hair from my hoover either . the fact is i have a job that pays better than any previous job i ever had (though i went thru some serious earbashing for 4 years). face it, the working world is prejudiced and there is fuck all any of us can do about it. we'd make a living out of sueing prospective employers if they admitted to it. just think yourself lucky you don't have a facial disfigurement, with or without long hair. so-called senior staff think i don't know, but i just play oblivious. it often shows in work related rants that i keep posting on this forum (..sorry!). imagine how quickly i'd be sacked if i handed a diary of incidents where i get contradicted
