Dude, don't do it. I did the same thing to get a grocery store job when no one else was hiring back in the day. The handbook said 'above the collar' so I wore a shirt with a collar to the barber. Then they made me wear a hair net anyway (those are sexy) even though none of the chicks with long hair had to wear them grr. First half-excuse they had they fired me, after like a month. Did I mention my hair was down to my ass? So yeah, I made it in 2 hours late once with updates by phone every half-hour as I basically rebuilt the top half of an engine in my driveway to make it to work.

And now like 14 years later I (sadly?) haven't cut my hair off since. I contemplate it from time to time, then someone tells me I should cut it and the thought of doing so passes. Speaking of head-shaving, I warned my girl she's likely to get one extreme or the other... mucho hair or nada.

Fortunately my employer of the last five years hasn't complained. I did stop wearing shirts with skulls and demons and shit to work once I got into a decent position where I unfortunately have to deal with people from time to time. Get used to the "chicks can come to work however they please, but guys have to look like an S&P 500 company president"-thing. I just finished up 10 years of this (guys in suits and ties, women in sweatsuits and flip-flops), which wasn't fair at all. Sure everyone complained to H/R...which looked like a college sorority - guess what happened? Nada...

Although one good bit of news. I worked at a retaurant that had a "no single piercings of ears" rule so girls could wear matching earrings, but guys with a single couldn't wear them. I immediately went out and got my right one done too...and made a point of wearing the gheyest pair I could find for my shift!

That being said, life's too short to work for large McCorporations with their discriminatory rules...try to find a smaller company that treats you like a human and not a number....although +1 on the chicks dig short hair thing

Cut you hair you long-haired, hippy, pinko freak.

This is the problem with kids today, no respect for authority and for the norms of decent society.

Forget all the BS and try this.

If you want the job, cut your hair.
              If you don't, move on.

Don't worry about the gay guy or the chicks. That is petty. Worry about yourself and what you need to do. If your long hair means that much to you, than this job may be the least of your problems.

Yes, I had long hair all my life except for while I was in the Marines in the early 80's and since '01 when I got into LE.

I have the choice of either shaving my head and being viewed as an outcast, or letting it go and looking like crap since half of my hair's gone anyways. Fuggem.

Honestly, you really should not have to cut it. Don't listen to this one and that one who say cut it and conform, that's the way of the world. It is not. I have a professional job, deal with clients (which are usually attorneys, police and or criminal investigators) all day, and it is not an issue at all.

It's a grocery store, so do you pay into the union? If so, contact a union rep and they will tell you the best course of action. Unless it is written within the terms of the union contract, their complaint can not hold water.

Anyways, my hair has been long (not just a little long) since I was 15, yes almost 22 years, and I have NEVER had a problem. Some people will dispute that, but I'm living proof that it can and DOES work in both professional and blue collar workplaces.

Voice, all good points. Let me ask you though, you gonna pay his bills while he pounds the pavement looking for someone to hire him? :ROTF:

                        I didn't think so.

That's because it's a bullshit thing to do. The last thing the world needs is another jackass lawsuit. If a company wants men to have short neat hair then so be it. It's their business. I've cut my hair before for a job.

If you don't want to cut your hair, get another job where they don't care.

Of course, I say this not having had a haircut of any kind for 10 years

You're right, I'm not gonna pay his bills, and hair grows back most of the time.....but again, he is 17 not 37.

That's why I suggested checking with a union rep, that will tell him if he has any right or if they do. Hell, it only takes a simple phone call. Just going in and saying no I'm not gonna cut it will just get him fired, however if it is on record with the union, he is protected. I wouldn't want to cut it either if I didn't have to. Best to find out your real options instead of just assuming or guessing.
