  • Picks, picks, picks.

After using 2mm Dunlops for the last 3+ years, I switched back to .73mm Dunlop Nylons this morning, which I had used for the 7 years prior. I was told by a friend of mine that the 2mms would tighten up my picking and make my playing cleaner.

So, with the .73s, I'm able to finally nail all my band's riffs I've ever had trouble playing. Haha, why was it so simple?

    Any experiences like this?

I had the same experience recently, switched from Dunlop 1.13 tortex to pickboy .7 nylons.

I have heard the same things about heavy picks. I have tried to use them but I can't keep a hold of them. They go flying out of my hand. I use the lightest Tortex you can buy and they stay put.

About 6 years ago I went from Fender Mediums to Purple tortex 1.14 and my rhythms did tighten up.....my leads still suck tho....lol

I always wondered why I had so much trouble with arpeggiating riffs. The 2s didn't have enough give! haha

I noticed a big improvement in my picking when I switched from Dunlop .88 tortex to 1mm Nylons.

My only gripe with them was that after a while, they would bend... I kept looking for a pick that was just as thick and comfy, but harder.

Finally found the Pickboy 1mm carbon nylon picks and never looked back.

yup, I play much better with Fender mediums than with any heavy pick.

except my acoustic 12, I use light picks for that.

IMO it is easier to play with a thinner pick, but tone and attack could suffer if its too thin. I think the thinner pick allows for less than perfect technique while a thicker pick requires you to be a little more precise. I use 1mm dunlop tortex sharps so they are not thick by any means but are thicker than lets say a fender medium. 2MM seems awful thick to me...maybe good for chords but leads I would think would be tough. I do know that if I cant find a tortex around and pick up one of the fender mediums laying around...it seems easier to deal with..but I like the attack and tone I get much better with the thicker and pointier tortex sharp. Sinistas...I have a gross of these so if ya want to try one PM your address...I found them hard to find in the shops

Comparison of the two...fender medium and the sharps...notice on the left the sharp is over the medium so you can see the difference that way too...IMO the less rounded pick gives me less bite on the strings

Yeah everytime I try the Jazz IIIs I can't fathom why anyone would use them. Tortex .88 for me. Perfect balance of hard (tone) and soft(control).

                      Picks, picks, picks.

                      > I went the opposite direction from everyone,I got hooked on Hotlicks copper picks back in high school. I started with the .008 gauge, then went to the .005 for years. I still have 2 from back then, and pull them out on occasion. I can get harmonics that I simply can't get with anything else, but everything else sounded thin, plus they wear strings out. I went back to the purple Tortex, then found these Everly Music picks that are the same gauges as the standard Tortex, but have a star shaped hole in the middle. I use the purple version, but also pull out the sharkfin Tortex and bought some of the sharp ones recently too. Tommy D.

I wear those Tortex Sharps out too quick and they're hard to grip too. I use Jazz IIIs and they seem to be great...sharp point, good to grip on and they last a little longer too (1 week for me though :/)

Only have to find smaller version of Jazz III somewhere...I can get only XL versions here.

Same thing with me. I've used extra-heavy (1.14) picks for years but have started using lighter picks, including a Fender medium, and am liking the thinner ones now.

Dunlop picks for me. .96mm purple Gator Grips, or the red Gel picks (I think they're 1.0mm). Though, I've been playing with the 1.0mm Big Stubbies lately (they used to be clear, now they're red). I can use a little heavier, but I can't stand anything thinner. Also tried the Ultex, but don't care for them all that much.

I used to use the Fender mediums but they always felt a little sloppy. I ended up switching to Pickboy 1.14 Carbon Nylons about 6 years ago and for me they're the perfect balance. Plus, they have a rough surface so the don't slide around like some others I've used.
