  • What *else* to do in Amsterdam?

I will be staying in Utrecht for about a 5 or 6 days starting next Monday. One friend is a Prof. with his own department and the other is a vascular surgeon. They are both a quite busy, so I will have to make the most of my time feeding the beast within.

I am not one for space cakes. I never understood, why one would wish to be slow and stupid. The Van Gogh travelling show will be in Budapest and my relatives wsh to go together. Of course I will have to go to the sex museum and the red light district to taunt the girls with, "So, did you honestly believe that you were going to be a nanny living in a country estate when you answered the ad? But as a consolation, I'll let you wash my bum while I draw on the wall with a crayon".

I will be going to check out Haar guitars in a shop, but where's to get a beer away from stoned tourists, decent jazz, good places for comfort style, local food and other places of interest for casual simple pleasures?

The wife and I were in Amsterdam last May. We checked out Madam Tussauds, the Anne Frank house, and one other museum...

We were only there for one night on our way to Spain, due to all flights from Schipol to Madrid being fully booked on the day we arrived in Amsterdam.

I doubt that there will be many tourists there this time of year. It was cold enough for people to be wearing down jackets at the end of May, so I would imagine that it is freezing now.

My family used to own this place: http://www.kasteel-dussen.nl/

It's kinda cool, I think it's between Utrecht & Amsterdam, you can tell 'em you know me!

What to do in Amsterdam? lmao... Really?

Well... Amsterdam has more museums per capita than anywhere else in the world... One book I have on the area shows over 30 museums.

Oh, and I hear there's one hell of a red light district!

there are several guitar shops in Amsterdam, and if you want to see Haar guitars why not make an appointment with Erik van de Haar (he lives closes to Utrecht)
There are some great diamondcutters in Amsterdam and you could always do the grand tour of the Heineken factory

and btw still lots of tourists around (it's about 9 degrees centigrade outside)

When I took that tour (admittedly over ten years ago), towards the end they put you on front of a wall of TV adverts of Heineken from the world over - like in a Clockwork Orange - and then stuck you in a room where they practically force fed you Heineken for three quarters of an hour. I'm not kidding, every time your glass was half empty they'd scowl at you and refill it. The tour was pretty cheap. Where I come from, there'd be a never-ending circle of students going around it...

There's a torture museum too, if it floats your boat... it's horrible.

I was supposed to go to Amsterdam back in '93 for the Mac World show, but after what went down at the Austrailian Mac show I got yanked off the job as my boss said he didn't want to lose me as I would never return. I begged and pleaded to let me go but he said if i send you, you won't return. I was bummed, we had company credit cards and expense accounts to blow up back then, it was a riot. the best way to do business is monkey business.
So as usual, I have nothing to help you with on advice-lol

Thank you all for the tips. Madam Tussaudes and Anne Frank's houise sound very interesting. The torture museum sounds sexy! I had no idea that Amstedrdam was so full of museums. I have been insanely busy with work and extra research. My brain is yet to even thing of decompressing. Looks like a blues concert on the 10th.

I am interested in Haar, but have 2 custom stratheads on the way and my tiny home is already full of guitar toys. I wouldn't want to bother the gentleman, but thank for the tip.

Sorry, I didn't even know who Maki Goto was until I checked it out. I wouldn't the nerve to buy that stuff. The sales clerk would be thinking, "kare ga hentai no otaku-kimoi-", sorry. The only men that buy anything associated to Morning Musume have serious issues in Japan.

Here's some cool guitar shops you might want to go to.

Those three have the coolest shit in the whole of the Netherlands. Maybe even in the whole of Europe. They are small shops but what they DO have makes it worth the visit.

Lol, yeah I believe they're called "wotas" or something. I'm think I'm still young enough to like it, without it being weird. The songs are just so uplifting.

I'm not a big fan of Madam Tussaudes. Most of the statues they have really don't looks like the real person. Aw well, it's still fun to see probably.
