  • Speaking of Cricket

I listen to the BBC and they are all over Cricket. I know about wickets and the flip. And I know a match is called for "Tea Time" at the half. And a game can last all day. And I have seen a cricket stick. But, I just don't get the rest. We used to play screen ball. That's where there would be 3 fielders and if you got the ball passed them, it was a hit. Can you UK guys explain the game so this dummy can understand it? I know, I can Google it, but I want you to teach me.

I tried to play one time when a bunch of Indian guys joined our group. It took FOREVER and no one ever really learned the rules.

I don't want a website to tell me. I want one of us to explain it. It would be like trying to explain Baseball to them. :ROTF: :ROTF:

Speaking of Rollie Fingers, I was a big A's fan when he pitched. I actually went to the 74 Series with the Dodgers. And we won.

I didn't I could explain it any better than that website. He did a good job of providing enough detail without bogging down. It was a good overview.

One thing he didn't really cover is spin bowling. He did mention that bowlers will often put a bit of spin on the ball, but didn't discuss the spin specialists.

Spin bowlers take a much shorter run up than pace (or fast) bowlers because their emphasis is on putting a lot of turn on the ball, rather than maximum speed towards the batsman. Now, bowling slow might sound like the last thing you want to do, but the good spinners will just bamboozle a batsman with the way a ball changes direction with spin as it hits the ground.

here's a video tutorial from Shane Warne, the greatest spin bowler of all time: click here

Of course, I could get a web explanation. I want to be a tourist and have a native explain it to me. We have just become Web-Lazy. I want one of you to give a "Cricket 101" class.

alright then. First lesson: the "cricket stick" you saw Ian Faith brandishing in Spinal Tap is called a "bat".

Basically, it's really dull, goes on even longer than baseball and is as interesting as watching paint dry. Oh, and the balls are really hard (insert joke here.....)

Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

Americans love their baseball... Australians like me love their cricket and take pride in it becuase we're currently the best in the world at it
