In terms of who is funding the dissenting side, Occam's Razor applies perfectly. Follow the money. Who stands to make billions of dollars with the status quo? The oil companies. Same as the tobacco companies who for years paid scientists money to say tobacco company did not cause lung cancer. And they are known to pour money into the propoganda machine for the dissenting view. Basically when big corporations take sides in a scientific debate, I promise you they will take the side that is least threatening to their bottom line regardless of how valid the science is.
In general, science has an agenda to discover the truth while corporations have an agenda to make money. Very often they conflict and the public suffers. There is much documented history on this.
