  • OMG Lurker posts! Re: Philly

Hello to all, long time member, but one with more to learn than to teach/discuss. Until now. I am relocating to the Philadelphia area in March and am hoping to continue making music in public. So, anyone have any good resources for meeting other musicians besides just walking up at a gig and introducing myself (which I plan to do)? Other areas I have lived in have had entertainment type newspapers or inserts that usually had classifieds for just such purposes, is it the same there?
Also, if you can give me the name of a good guitar/amp tech, that would be most appreciated.

Take a walk down south street, that's all I know.
Not helping the situation since 1965!

I don't know about amp tech, but my guitar tech is amazing. He got my action down to .05" and .03". If you don't mind going about half an hour to Collingswood, NJ go to southjerseyguitarrepair.com

I will be working in Mt Laurel some of the time, so I may look up your man in the not too distant future. Tommy, would that be west south street or east south street?

Hey man, welcome to the neighborhood Philly's a cool place, but its like any other city. The areas surrounding the stadium complex aren't great areas to wander at night by yourself. And if you plan on hitting any of the strip clubs or south street just make sure you bring a friend that knows the area.

West Chester music used to be a good shop to go for gear and repairs, though its been a while since i've been up there. As far as good techs that I know of head south to Newark and hit DS Music and ask for Dana Sutcliffe, you wont find a better tech in the tri-state area with the kind of turn around he has. Their shop is a hole in the wall with mostly over priced used junk to be honest, but their repair work is remarkable.

A few times a year you can pick up a loop starting at KahunaVille in Wilmington, it hits all the bars and clubs around the area, its a fun time and the busses run till the bars close.

Im not sure if they make it up to philly or not but two local bands I really like are Beyond the Scar and Unbroken. They play around DE and MD quite a bit.

In Jersey dont head too far south on 130, once you've hit Camden just turn around, it reminds me of a scene out of RoboCop. The Betsy Ross bridge is as far south as I go on 130.

Im sure there's people here that know a lot more about philly and jersey than I do, but I do what I can

            Later,

            Steve

I've heard the word on Camden, for sure and I appreciate the neighborhood warnings. On a previous trip the wife and I found ourselves on Lancaster Ave and THAT was some culture shock. We haven't lived in a big city since we left Phoenix when our daughter was born in '89. We will be flying in tomorrow to look for a house, hopefully in Chester or Delaware county. We're staying in West Chester for the week, hafta check that place out, thanks for the replies fellas!
