  • Shipping UPS

I just shipped out an sg i sold on fleabay yesterday and to ship from washington state to new york cost me 90 bucks!! I shipped a dean ML awhile back to florida and i know for sure it didn't cost that much (not over 50 for sure). The lady said the rates changed recently and if i boxed it myself they can't guarantee insurance on it.

Sorry dudes just had to rant about it.

Damn! Did you use a UPS Store or regular UPS facility or other authorized facility? The UPS Stores do seem to charge a little bit more (and they did also tell me they can't guarantee isurance if I boxed it myself), but I've never paid more than around $35 to ship a guitar, even from NJ to CA.

UPS's prices have been going up and up lately. I've never had a problem with them but I would always take it to a hub or something like that if it's available. Those "UPS Stores" really do rape you...
          I'm angry because you're stupid

I shipped a 3lb bike frame and it cost me $75 using the UPS store. That was the last time. They put it in a 36"X36"X36" box filled with peanuts and their rates are double counter rates too. That's why you got hammered, their supplies, their labor, double rates.

I took an acoustic guitar to a UPS store (in a gig bag..no hard case) they quoted me $105.00 dollars!!!! I threw a fit. Went across town to another store..they charged me $19.00. I was telling them about the other place, and turns out the manager was the manager of BOTH stores. He had me describe the girl. A few days later he sent me a letter in the mail telling me that she no longer worked there.

I started going through FedEx. The prices are about 20% cheaper and as long as I marked the actual value of the item they didn't say there would be any problem if I packed it myself.

I ship from where I work because UPS picks up here daily, and I can still ship fully insured all the way to Cali for about $40 give or take. Always take it to a hub or designated pick-up location, the stores are insane. God forbid you have to actually buy some of their packing material!

In spite of alot of horror stories I've seen posted about UPS, they've yet to damage a guitar I've shipped or received (knock on wood).

I use FedEx myself. I've never had a problem, well i take that back. They did lose one of my guitars that I shipped to relative. I filed a claim and got reimbursed in about 7-10 working days. Other than that they've had a clean record with me and I do a lot of shipping.

It always seems to cost me more to ship things than I charge...UPS is better than Fed ex...but they're all way expensive for the actual service you recieve...especially if you have problems or questions.
