Here in the UK Ford and GM are standard cheap and cheerful (?) cars. They're not really known for their reliability and usually have plummeting resale values. I've had several Fords (Escort, Focus, Transit) and several GM's (Nova, Cavalier, Frontera). All complete shite! (I should say except for the Frontera).

I've had Toyota for 5 years now (Hilux Surf and Hilux Invincible), perfect quality in reliability and engineering. I'll drive Toyota till I die!! (hopefully not in it!).

So, I come back to my intent. Has the US auto makers blown it so badly that it is too late for a come back? You guys have to remember that I have a sense of history only because I have been around for 56 years. I was there when the Japanese first introduced their cars. I was there when Detroit melted down in the '70's and '80's with junk cars. Then Detroit just did what they did and let Toyota and all the rest steal our domestic market. We used to be the greatest industrial nation in the world. In fact, we invented it. It amazes me that we have spent 125 years being King of the Roost and we have been knocked of the perch in 30 years.

I want a '63 VW Beetle. I love those cars. I have flipped one and slid 150 yards on its side. I have also spun out, flipped and rolled over on its top and spun around a few times. It was the same car. God, those were the days.

I've owned easily over 100 cars, and maybe 5 were imports. This is my daily driver. One of the best cars I've owned. Fast, powerful, handles great, stops great, and a trunk big enough for a dozen guitars!

I own an American made Toyota and a Canadian built Chevy? go figure. We will be in big trouble one day because we will not be able to build items to defend our own country.

Now why is it the Japanese can control production costs better in the US than the Big 3 can?
