I don't know what you know of local music, but on the heavier side of things, Porphyria is pretty well regarded: www.myspace.com/porphyria.

LoG, etc. isn't really my style, so I can't help much otherwise.

To be a little more specific, I guess death metal that is on the melodic side with good vocals and musicians. I'm kinda sick of Meshuggah, and I want fresh heavy shit to draw inspiration from (in a bit of a rut) thanks and keep firing away...

              Melodic death?

The Accursed and Revocation are like thrash/death... www.myspace.com/theaccursed and www.myspace.com/revocation. Both are great live.

Melodic death usually refers to gothenburg style...

Gojira doesn't sound like too may other bands. Not sure what you'd call them.

Maybe you could try: Yyrkoon - Occult Medicine
                Neuraxis - Trilateral Progression

not quite sure what you are looking for

I may be off base with this recommendation, but Arsis might be one to check out.

Gojira kind of has a Strapping Young Lad influence. You could check them out. They are pretty hardcore, but totally awesome.

Also, if you haven't check em out yet, try Mastodon on for size.

not really my style, but when I think of melodic death I think of the following four bands: In Flames(old), Dark Tranquillity, Amorphis, and Soilwork.
