I really don't understand how letting the animals run around before killing them is any more humane. They are bred for food, not to lead fulfilling lives of running around a field

You have obviously never seen how they are kept. chickens can't move at all so the meat doesn't get tough and they even rip off their beaks. We would be in jail for animal cruelty if we treated our pets the way "our food" is treated.

Cooped up chickens are sicker. You are likelier to get salmonella from cooped up chickens than you are from free range chickens.

WE have a shitload of chicken farmers here, they dont raise em in cages. big friggin barns with automatic feeders,waterers, heating and A/c systems, lights on 24/7, they can raise a chicken from a hatchling to a fryer in 5 weeks, with all the hormones and high power food, a 5 week old barn yard chick is still a baby by comparison, eat more beef, (I need a higher market price so I can buy another guitar)
