  • Multi-vocalist rock/metal suggestions?

Lately, I'm appreciating really richly-layered music. It helps me to develop my sense of harmony and trains my ears to pick apart different instrumental tracks or vocal tracks.

As a result, I'm finding it REALLY hard to listen to bands that only have one guitarist, unless the guitarist records at least two guitar parts in the studio.

But lately, I really like rich backing vocals and hearing vocal parts done by people OTHER than the lead vocalist. They can be other members of the band who can actually sing well, as in the case of Def Leppard, or collaborations between a number of different singers, like Avantasia.

Besides metalcore/emo and the Beach Boys and Queen, where else can I go for some heavier music that has rich backing vocals? Thanks.

Most 80's stuff has tons of vocals. Beyond that some Savatage/TSO stuff is pretty heavy on the vocal harmonies. Also maybe check out some of the more out there groups like Nightwish, Dragonforce, etc.

Into Eternity. Vocal duties are shared between Stu the lead singer, Tim the main songwriter and lead guitarist and on the Dead Or Dreaming album (their best work imo) Dan (the other guitarist then). Jim the drummer does some vox too.

Look into a band called Sweet (they did Fox on the Run, Ballroom Blitz). Their vocal harmony style is very similar to Queen (it's arguable who copied whom).

Here's one of their best songs vocally, which comes from a great album called "Give us a Wink". Highly recommended.

The above clip is lip-synced, but the mix is a little diffferent from the album version, which makes it neat to listen to.

The songs are a little dated, but I still listen to a lot of Sweet. Call it a "guilty pleasure". Guitarist Andy Scott was very under-rated. He wrote some great stuff.

Symphony X when they play live. In the studio Russ does all the vocals tho.

I can't sing worth shit, i wish i had a decent enough voice to at least do some backing vocals. + playing guitar takes 100% of my concentration, so i can forget about singing and playing at the same time
