I mean, this so-called "Security Expert" they've got is asking "Why can't they determine if these two shootings were related? Why not check the surveillance tape?"

I'm no forensic specialist, but I do know you can't just have a cop walk in the first room and say "yup, 9mm" and then walk into the 2nd scene and say "yup, 9mm here, too. It's the same guy". You know how common a 9mm is?

As for the security cameras, let's see: shots ring out on a college campus, dozens of people take off running, campus policy states that in such an emergency students should assemble for a headcount.
How many people are going to think that's B.S. and are going to run for their car and get the heck out of there? Dozens.
Then you've got the gunman in the crowd running for his car as well, so what do you see on the videotape? Dozens of people running for their cars and heading out of town.

And yet the "Security Expert" can't figure that one out?

It would also be highly unusual to have a surveillance camera inside a classroom.

It's just a sad scenario that we need to start putting warning systems in our schools to warn of gunmen. Where the fuck is the respect for human life?

This is a very sad day in the history of America.

And I don't really have much more than that to add.

I think an immediate lockdown would have been appropriate because since nearly TWO HOURS elapsed between the incidents, and the first incident was before any classes were in session, that might have prevented him from getting into the building he wanted to shoot up.

As is, he chained the doors of that building shut from the inside to prevent escapes, so he put a lot of thought into this.

So I guess we need to stars arming RAs now....

That's pretty fucked-up - No, it's very sad and very scarey. I hope no-one on this board has been personally affected by it.

However, now the cynic in me is wondering which band is going to get the blame for this one...

Works in Texas, as I recall. Armed on-the-street robberies dropped significantly once the right to carry concealed was given a few years back.

And I'm not convinced this was 1 gunman.

2 hours? They're saying he went in and shot his ex-girlfriend then went and shot 20+ others 20 minutes away 2 hours later? Was he targetting everyone she cheated on him with?

Or did he do his business with her and leave, then, out of sheer unpredictable "what are the odds?" coincidence, - or as a copycat so often does - a second unrelated gunman who had a bigger beef with the school as a whole comes in and starts shooting?

And yeah, I've seen the images they get from those classroom cameras. I've seen better images on a cheap cel phone.
However, the "security expert" in question was specifically referring to the statement that campus and local police assumed the guy may have been fleeing the state, so naturally they would focus on the parking lot cameras to see the car as it left (though it most likely couldn't show the guy heading straight for the state line, unless it's right across the street).
Classroom cameras would have no bearing on whether the guy was trying to flee the state, and even then, you cannot review all the tapes in less than 2 hours. They could have been in the Media Room setting up the playback when the second shooting started.

I say video game. Gears of War is pretty popular, as is Dead Rising.

GTA 4 is coming, maybe the guy did a marathon session of San Andreas?

Hopefully he was listening to Gangsta Rap - I'd love to see those guys in front of the Supreme Court defending their "music" like Priest and Ozzy have had to.

Truly horrible event. I have a feeling there will be a large fallout from this, since it took them two hours to even inform the students that a shooting took place. I don't know how my former school would have handled it, but I'm hoping that they would have closed the university for the day while the cops searched every room.

As far as using email...it's the fastest way to reach everyone. Not all students have phones in their rooms, you have commuters who are already on the way to campus, and the campus is too big to just have a P.A. announcement. It should have been sent out immediately though, not two hours later.

Where has it ever been? People place relative values on human lives all the time. As soon as you do that at a fundamental level, you have lost.

As ridiculous as it seems Tim, it really wasn't in theory.

They already had people on yesterday hypothesizing about what video games this guy might have played and how it affected him going off.

That's the problem with today's world, nobody is every responsible for their actions, there's always a cause behind it, and then the politicians grab on and go to make political hay. Newc's right in the sense that i'm sure we'll hear something about this guy (whether it's music or gaming) that "contributed to his frame of mind" and then inevitably that will become a huge public debate.

Newc's just sayin' if it's gotta be something, why not gangsta rap?

                            I for one, don't disagree.

ABC decided last night that gun laws were to blame. They did that before the idenity of the shooter was known or even the type of gun or where he even got the gun.
