It depends on how often you use your phone, and how "in touch" you like to stay.

I use a telephone for 2 things: Pizza and 911. Pizza doesn't deliver out here, and I've got 18 acres, a backhoe, and 5 guns, so 911 won't be hearing from me

I do keep a Cingular Pay-As-You-Go thing in the event I have an emergency - lots of open country out here with low traffic content, so a blow-out on the highway in the middle of the night means you end up on a Government Chart
Plus it's Tornado Country, so if the landlines get severed, at least we've got the cel.
I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

The most human thing we can do is comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.

I was cell phone only for the last couple years and everything was fine, but I recently purchased a new home and had to have a landline installed for alarm monitoring. Basic service only.

I have Verizon FIOS internet tv and phone I hardly use the phone service, but it's only $12-13 per month with the services included. My cell is through cingular and never had any problems. I have 4 phone on a family plan for 69.99. Not too bad I guess.

The wife and I got rid of our land line two months ago since we're moving soon. It went pretty good the first month but last month we went over our minutes and I think we get 1500 every month. I think I used around 20 of those! I'll have to see if Verizon will let me bump up our minutes package instead of paying overage charges.

Wife and I each have a cell (Cingular family plan with roll-over, free nights and weekends, etc.) and 4 land lines. Two for business/personal and two for VDSL broadband connection.
Wife runs her business from home and our alarm system needs a line. They have a cell option for the alarm, but it costs a small fortune.

Cell only for voice for probably 6 or 8 years....I had a land line for a while there for 'net dial-up and for monitoring/changing settings on the control system at work for overnight on call at Colorado Ocean Journey Aquarium where I was a Life Support Systems Engineer for a couple years. (got bought by Landry's Restaurants so I left- I can't work for the corporate restaurant mentality or lack thereof anymore!) Saying that I hate Qwest with a passion would be an understatement, so I want to have absolutely nothing to do with them, so now I have WildBlue satellite internet, DishNetwork satellite TV, and no land lines.
I use T-Mobile with a 1000 anytime minutes, free nights, free weekends, free long distance, and free roaming plan for right at $50 a month. I've been there for the last 5 or 6 years, so no commitments. I think you can get a similar plan on a new plan but with a commitment....I know it works in Kentucky since I was in Cinncinati/Newport a few years ago. (Sons of Silence New Years' party!) Another thing I like about T-Mobile is that their phones use SIM cards, so if I mess up a phone I can just switch the card into another phone and away I go- without having to deal with them at all! I have all my contacts saved to the card, so they go to the new phone automatically. I've used this feature several times for upgrades and with a backup phone when I've screwed one up!

I got rid of my landline around 2001. I picked up VOIP (packet8.net) in roughly late 2002. I was very happy with that service until about 7 months ago. Comcast took over operations from Adelphia here in central PA and my cable modem service went to shit. I get 100% packet loss on anything more than 1400 bytes. Comcast can't seem to understand there is a problem "but your internet is working?" Morons. My cell phone starts getting full service approximately 200ft. from my house, however, in my house I can't get a reliable signal.

Verizon is coming today to reinstall a land line.

I live in my own little telephone hell.

I'm in college and have never used a landline and I don't intend to use one when I'm in more permanent housing either. The only reason I'd ever get a landline would be to run a business

This is why I now have DSL, "Comcast" what a joke!

Comcast is around here in the Denver, Colorado area too- never used 'em and don't plan to- it seems they don't do very well wherever they operate according to the rumors I've heard.

This is what I don't want.

I was going to check out Verizon because they have this 30-day trial, I can mess with the phone and see if I have service here and just get a feel for it. And if I dig it - keeper and kill the landline. If I don't cancel it - no worries.

Cricket is definately in the area, they advertise like crazy. I don't mind signing a contract if its just safe and within a good pricing and my credit is good so it wouldn't be a problem at all.

I've yet to go anywhere to really talk to anybody though, I just wanted to see if there were any good horror stories.

Although I'm sure some people think being close to kin will increase services, I dunno! Ha, quite frankly I'd be dealing with more foreigners?

Thats how it was last time with cingular with the pay as you go thing, they cancelled my account saying I didn't pay. Had a balance a little over 20$ and they were supposed to add on that months and roll over the 20$.

Well account gets cancelled, 20$ gone. Cell phone disabled when I needed it, and it wasn't my fault because it was supposed to be drawn from my bank account on that 'certain' day.

Yeah sentence ran together. I don't mind to sign one with another company, so in other words a contract won't run me off if the company proves to be worth it.

Seems on their commercial they say all they re-imburse is for calls, so maybe that mean that month's plan amount?

I'd examine it a lot as there other issues like Actual hardware costs (are they gonna take a 30 day old used phone back? or they're gonna give you a couple hundred dollar phone, I doubt either), and there are activation fees etc...

                              Seems sorta iffy.
