Yup, Sox have been over 100mil for a few years now, not poor by any means. 2006 team was 124mil good for #2 in spending. Actually there are a lot of teams over 90mil and 25 out of 30 teams are over 50mil.

Can't blame the Roger thing on current Sox ownership though.

When it comes to professional sports, it's almost ALWAYS about the money. It's human nature to want to get the best deal possible. As a life-long baseball fan, I would love to believe that Team, Fans,City, and other things come in to play, (and they may on some level) but money talks.. bottom line.

As a Yankee fan, I am fortunate that they are willing to drop cash when they need to...and I don't think that reflects badly on the organization. It just shows that they will do anything within the rules to win a championship. Same as the Sox, or any other franchise that really cares about winning.

One recent player that comes to mind who did not think $$ first was Bernie Williams this past year. While his skills have diminished, he could have signed 'somewhere' and made decent $$ for one more year, even as a bench player. But he decided that he wanted to be a Yankee, or not play at all... Some have taken him to task for that, but I think it was a classy move...

great point kenn, Bernie has always been a class act. He should have been given a chance to make the team, and I don't think he would have been a hardship being a DH on some days, he can still hit the ball. I was confused by the Mientkewciz signing , or however you spell his name. great glove, no hit.

I think what they did to Bernie was disrespectful to say the least. Bernie Williams is a class act..

As far as the money issue I think you may be missing the point.

Pedro~ Stated it wasn't about money, he wanted to finish his career in Boston. He said he would never consider going to the Yankees. As soon as he became a free agent one of the first teams he interviewed with was ....The Yankees. He also complained Boston didn't respect him. With those guy respect means money, period..

Turned out to work in Bostons favor ..Rotaor cuff surgery this past off season. Exactly what Theo was concerned over even when Petey was saying he was in tip top shape ...

Damon~ Trashed the Yankees, said he'd sign for less money, it was'nt about the coin ... look what happened....

Damons a hard player, He puts up his numbers and he usually plays hurt. He's too wrapped up in public image though. He's been hurt quite a bit these last 2 seasons.. Not something you want to see in a long term deal ... But something we could see in JD Drew so who knows...

Roger's issue with the RedSox is a dead one. Dan Duquette is gone and the fans here have been very vocal about wanting him back here. It's not about that though, it's about making one comment in public and having it turn out that you well full of crap to begin with ... That's the part that gets me. I'm not mad the Yankees got him, I think it could be a turnaround for NY and it makes for really good baseball. Lets face it, so far the Bos-Yanks games haven't been the usual knock down drag em out games that they usually are....

I don't hate the game at all.. .. I just hate the double talk ...

They write a check to baseball too at the end of the season, just not as large as the Yankees.
                    Yes!!
and those poor little Red Sucks, just wrote a check for what was it? $40 million JUST to talk to the Japanese pitcher and then they forked out a deal with after that.
Those Yankees spending money like crazy, buying a championship, whatever.

You can't buy a championship, I've got the proof to back it up, have the yankees won ther series since 2000? no they have been back to it 2 times , but did not win it. It takes chemistry, the right people in the right spots, read the book by billy beane, Oakland's amazing team builder with very little money. I undrstand you kev, I just hate it when the owners cry how they can't compete, and when they get a check from the bigger market teams, they should be required to put that money into their team , not their pockets. Otherwise, does Miller beer write a check to Budweiser because they sold more beer than they did last year(if that was the case), I highly doubt it. I hate hearing that the Yankees buy the championship , it's so off base it's hilarious. We have more homegrown players than most teams I would be willing to bet. Yes, Kevin, the yankees lost money last year, but they still have an endless boatload of cash that is staggerring beyond belief. They pulled in over a billion in revenue from the YES T.V. station alone last year if I remember correctly.

Over a billion with the crap that is on that station? Man that proves there are a lot of suckers out there. I figured they had to pay people to listen to Michael Kay.

kay is among my top 5 most unlistenable announcers, but NESN does exactly what YES does, only worse, but i'll give you the kay thing, it's painful to listen to.

Hey Tommy my hate statement about the Yankees, was all in the spirit of being a big time Dodger fan back in the day, hating the Yankees just made the game more fun,
The amount of money they have to spend is just insane, and like you said it doesn't ensure success, but that hasn't seemed to stop em from tryin.
you can bet your bottom dollar every Sox/Yankees game is gonna be a sell out and on national TV (if it wasn't already)
One thing about Roger he's one of those guys who brings out a strong reaction either for or against.
I say the boy ain't right!
