"When I first heard that Marge was joining the police academy, I thought it would be fun and zany, like that movie Spaceballs. But instead it was dark and disturbing. Like that movie -- Police Academy."
Yeah, I figure if I am lucky enough to get in the academy, it's gonna take a lot to get me to drop. It would have to be me keeling over or something dramatic. I'll suffer bootcamp for 6 months to get a solid 50k starting salary a year job.
Not many other choices around here and actually, I think I'll like it. Always had the interest but other good paying jobs kept me out. It was "45k to safely sell transmissions, or 50k to get shot at... Hmmm...." Time have changed tho...
Ehh... we'll see. Lotsa obstacles between today and actually getting on the job... Hopefully, I'll get the fair chance to try.

50K is the base salary..you will NEVER make 50K, not even if you tried..you'll never see under 60K...as a level 1 Patrolman.
There is SO much "easy money" to be made as a cop..between FTO pay, WDO's, court-time, infinite part time gigs...and that's not including all the cool perks...(cheap booze, food, and chicks ect )..I took full advantage of the food!
I won't say what my best year was , but there is countless basic patrolmen that make well over a 6 figure income...but those fuckers don't have a life.
You know me, I'm a lazy fucker and can't waite to go home..just doing a 8 hr day, I always got a 1 1/2 OT just being a FTO..it adds up quick..
You accumulate alot of hours on the books..you get 10 hours of sick time each month..and that too adds up quick..you can use that time to take days off (-8) or get paid.
I took -8's ALL the time, and I still had 1000+ hours on the books..which I got when I retired...do the math!
As far as taking time off, sick days, benefits and pension plan..there is no job better!

Yeah, but the downside is you have to deal with a lot of assholes with a smile on your face. I would think "Going By The Book" will be the toughest challenge.
Inazone, What do you think were their biggest hurdles?
I think it was a matter of discipline. In Minnesota, police officers need their Associate degree, so that means their specialized classes and the general ed stuff everyone has to deal with. My first-year roommate clearly was driven to carry on a family tradition in law enforcement, and he made it a priority. There were 101 ways to get booted out, and he stayed focused on school. I lost track of him after that first year, but I know that he graduated and is still a cop.
The second year, I had a roommate who was the classic "mama's boy" from the moment he left home. He was a nice kid, but very much out of his element and easily distracted. Almost from the start, he was unable to balance classroom studies with the physical discipline. He got booted due to bad grades, but honestly I don't think he had a passion for the job anyway. You can just tell when some people are going through the motions.
There were a lot of law enforcement students that either dropped out or got kicked out of the program. But in your case, you have the advantage of coming in from the "real world" rather than fresh out of school. You know that there are bills to pay and obligations to juggle, and you're not looking for a continuation of high school. At 18 years old, I don't think that most of the guys I knew were really dedicated to making a career of it.
I did badly in high school as my priorities were whacked like that. I took my college stuff when I was in my late 20s (after I snapped out of it) with a real life attitude and mostly kept a 4.0 average, messing up in the end slightly, due to a messy divorce.
Here's why you will make it, Cleve. You don't have peach fuzz like Inazone was taiking about. From all the time I have known you here, it sounds like you have the whiskers to be a fuzz. I think that made sense.
Man, If I showed you guys pics of me fresh out of the academy..you'd be rollin'..yeah I could fit right in Reno 911..the copstache, Ray Bans and ect..
I eventually cultivated a look that really pushed the envelope big time...well, I was the ONLY cop with a Mohawk..I wore that for 4 years..
I didn't get too much "grief" for because I showed up for work and on time..and where I worked, that was rare..
When I was in that VH trib..I had to play Michael Anthony on weekends..I wore my hair way passed "dress code". I even got ab offical medical excuse to shave only twice a month..John remembers that...we played together in those days.
Yeah, in your first year you always look clean and proper..but you'll slowly gruff up..nobody really cares as long as you're not a pain in the ass.

This is true..and earings , piercings..they cared more about that..than my mohawk..true!
Only one dickhead boss kept givin' me shit about it..but I was in good with his boss (who's the cheif now)...so..fuggums.
